Fine art paper for canon w6200....can anyone advise please?

Post by summer-data »

I have a customer who wants a photo enlarging onto matt paper, we have advised glossy paper for a photo but apparently the customer is always right! Now that i've finally got the printer working i wondered if anyone could recommend a suitable paper for this purpose. I've googled it and got a few ideas but i'm a firm believer of word of mouth. Can anyone help?

I am sure there are others with more experience in printing than me.

I use Fotospeed Matt Ultra (240gsm) and Fotospeed EG High White Smooth 100% Cotton Rag (315gsm(.

Both available from LION and you send off for a Free Custon ICC profile.

I get superb results from Hahnemuhle Fine Art Photo Rag 308. All my customers are in love with it. It is expensive, but you gets what you pay for.

is your 6200 a P or a D? should be OK with Dye if it is.

Hi chris and john thanks for your replies. it's a P. I had some paper that was already in the shop when i bought it, it was thick paper like thin card if that makes sense and it seemed ok but i dunno what it was or where it came from. I've looked a the hahnemuhle it is a bit more expensive than i thought, the fine art pearl best describes what i'm looking for but again it's pricey. like you said tho you get what you pay for!

I think you will need to try a selection of papers to see what is best for your printer. Some manufacturers will send a sample pack if you ask nicely. I have no experience of the 6200 but it is 4 years old so I am guessing it will not perform to the same level as say a modern Epson with K3 inks. However that does not mean to say the results will not be good !.

Matt paper is widely used by wedding and portrait photographers. I have a 12x8 dye sub printer that can print on gloss or matt. I find that framing a gloss picture behind glass can be a bit too much whereas the matt print works very well. I supply gloss prints to customers who want to create a wedding album etc. Incidently the quality of a dye sub printer is fantastic, now if only they made an A0 version....

I agree about gloss under regular glass. I think matt or semi-matt finishes give a better result.

I use the Pearl too... superb!! I custom profile all my media myself and it does make a difference.

You won't go wrong with either the 308 rag or the Pearl. Try and stick to one make as it can get even more expensive using a multitude of different papers.

Fantastic advice! i'd recommend fotospeed to anyone. They were so helpful! They sent out a swatch sample and John you were right the EG high white smooth is great it's given just the result the customer wanted. If anyone needs help with paper i'd say give them a try.

Papers

On my Epson 7800 I have gone through a few and have to say Hahnemuhle Fine Art is lovely for pictures, in particular Black and White and Sepia.

Permajet do a sample pack which is useful as its about 20 sheets and you can try them all out.

Have a look at www.luminous-landscape.com where Michael reviews different types of papers for some more detailed analysis.

I've really got to get round to trying the new Gold papers form Ilford and Kodak as well which are supposed to be breathtaking.

A paper is only as good as its profile though, one of the reasons I use the ImagePrint RIP as they will generate a custom profile for you for both colour and black and white in 4 different light sources and two different printing resolutions free of charge if you own their product. The other being I can't be bothered to keep changing black inks so run Phatte Black. Of course this isn't an issue on your 6200.

Hi, I use mostly Permajet papers for my images, and in particular Omega works very well as a matt paper, and gives good deep colours. Also profiles are available for download to suit most printers. Morco are about the cheapest suppliers I've found.
