Suppliers in Germany - particularly glass??

Post by juststartingup »

Hello

I am new to this forum and just starting up in the home based picture framing business - currently posted to Germany with my husbands job.

I was just wondering whether anyone knew of any hints and tips on German suppliers etc? I hear Nelisen Bainbridge has a German arm but am not sure who they distribute through?

Also, my biggest concern out here is glass - it is SO expensive! I have been quoted 45 euros per metre squared - I wonder whether anyone knows of another route I can try?

Many Thanks.

Welcome, to The Framers Forum

I’m not that familiar with the German market, however the following may help.

www.spagl.de

Cresent Mount (Mat) board are also in Germany http://www.crescent-europe.com/ they distribute the Tru-Vue speciality glass http://www.tru-vue.com/

For plain float glass I would just find a local glass supplier who will supply you…you will need to shop around for a reliable supplier….Spagl don’t list plain glass on their site but I would suspect that they do have it available, it would be worth checking out….

Lion Picture Framing supplies have a German presence http://www.lionpic.co.uk/

AMS are also in Germany they do the fittings for aluminium frames they only sell through distributors, that said if you give them a call they might be able to direct you to a local glass supplier. http://www.artmaterialsservice.com/germany/index.htm

The best of luck with your venture …..

Wow! Dermot thank you so much, I can't tell you how useful that has been. I am very glad I came on here!

Any other advice from other people still hugely welcome but that gives me a great starting point, thanks again.

I see you've been sent to Spagl..... they are great.... we use them here in the UK and find their quality to be outstanding, their delivery is also fantastic !

Serious post now.

Tip: When buying float glass, make sure that your supplier interleaves each lite with paper. Cuts down on scratches. :)

Hi you are correct glass is very expensive in Germany, I found a local firm and rather than buy sheets I get it cut to size, I negotiated a discount. Clearly buying it cut to size there is no wasteage.

Juststartingup - that was mouthful for the vicar at your christening! Pardon my asking, but why not use your real name on the Forum - which I guess is so much nicer anyway.
If you are in northern Germany, our little showroom is in Uedem, near to Weeze airport. If you contact Stephen there, he can arrange for you take a look at everything that's on show. Email me at martinharrold@blueyonder.co.uk and I'll give you all his contact details. We despatch from UK (but not glass - maybe we should. John Palmer - are you reading this?), so depending upon the vagaries of the currency rate, we sometimes work out quite a bit cheaper than buying in Germany - but not always.

juststartingup wrote:Hello,

Somebody must be mistaken, Euro 45,--/sqm is definately too much. There are distributors in the north of Germany who carry the main brands like Nordrahmen, another one in Neumünster called Dekorat and www.ibis-online.de

Good luck.

Hello juststartingup.

Florian here from Spagl, Germany. (http://www.spagl.de)
Please post me your location, I will find someone for you where you could buy glass.
Also you could have a look at our web site (go to "outlet stores" and put in your postal code)

45 € / m2 sounds a bit expensive to me

I hope you will find a good supplier for glass soon.

Best regards

Florian
