This is my first post on the forum. What a fantastic and fascinating place it is.
I thought I'd take the opportunity to pick a few brains. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks for joining mountboard for those extra large pieces of work when, like I say Jumbo board just isnt big enough

I know that when you need to make a frame with a huge mount, that it invoives splicing boards together (possibly covering the resultant "hyperjumbo" board in fabric). Alas, but I've never had call to do such a job. But watch this space. I'm sure someone will be along to advise you further.

Had to do a panoramic landscape about 2.5m wide for a customer two years ago and merely told him that I would splice the board vertically in the middle but that whilst doing it as carefully as possible, the splice would not be totally invisible. I glued a strip at the back of the join and took care to ensure that the bevelled edges lined up well, ignoring the outer edge (which shouldn't have been different but was a mm out of sinc.) Then glued strips all around the back of the mount to stiffen it a little because it was hell trying to handle the mount on my own with it flopping around. Periodically get to the customers house (had a valentines dinner there on Sat.) and the spliced mount still looks perfect. Have also done some creative cutting and adding of bits to hide the join but this type of thing needs careful planning in sympathy with the artwork/photo going into the mount because it essentially then becomes part of or an extension of the artwork

We are potentially venturing into the realms of "Those jumbo mounts joined brilliantly, the job looks terrific. Now, how do I get it through the workshop door..."
Whether you splice or mitre, make it deep (strong) and conceal the joins.
If mitred you can make a feature of the joins - just cover them with something decorative to suit.
If mitred OR spliced you can wrap. If spliced, use more than one board thickness, whatever thickness you are using, and stagger the joins.
Nielsen do a 'Super Jumbo' board - 96"x something daft - 2 problems. 1. Your mountcutter and.... 2. The cost - I think they are cotton, available in white only, and in packs of 25 at about £25 a sheet.
Glazed? the sheet I mentioned earlier I think is the largest available but look on conservation direct ~ under their boards section if not there ask at your local exhibition mounters
