Stopped generating power in the mid-seventies/early eighties. I think all that's left of the building these days is the outer shell. Such a shame: it's one of my favourite manmade structures - a real design classic.

Look on the bright side, while Gordon Brown is telling us the "we are doing everything we can to combat swine flu" it's just jargon for the truth......sod you lot, I'm doing bugger all!
Just think what other stuff can be buried in the news while this is going on.

It's even got my wife worried, She called me in a panic from the petrol station today saying she "didn't want to get out the car because of the swine flu"

Then the penny dropped, so I told her " It's Mexico, not Texaco"

I heard a spokeswoman on the radio this morning who was from the Center for Disease Control.

She was very cautious about saying anything that would contribute to the media hype (“hysteria”), but the one confirmed death in the U. S. was (as Dermot said) an infant from Mexico who was in Texas at the time.

This physician said that the few confirmed cases were, so far, very mild - milder than the “seasonal” flue that comes around every winter. That is likely to change as it infects more people at risk (infants and people with compromised immune systems).

Some one (not from the CDC) opined that it is possible that older people who have been around long enough to have had swine flu in the past, may be less likely to develop severe symptoms since they may have antibodies in their systems.

The media hype about a “pandemic” may be just that. By definition from the WHO, a pandemic is one which is found in two or more member countries of the organization. The word apparently has nothing to do with the morbidity or mortality or the disease – just how many borders it crosses.

What gets my flying pig is that the media are probably fully aware that a substantial proportion of the population will not bother finding out for themselves exactly what the WHO is referring to as a potential "pandemic." My immediate gut reaction to the word 'pandemic' is to think 'ebola' or 'bubonic plague.'

What annoys me even further is the fact that the media hysteria is not being backed up by what I would consider to be relevant disease control activities if the current virus is so threatening. Example: we have a confirmed case of viral infection here. Yesterday, it was reported that none of the people that shared the flight with him when he returned to Dublin were checked out for possible infection!!

I believe that the media and disease control centres do have an important and valuable role in containing the potential spread of noxious bugs; but the media's seeming addiction to sensationalising everything is potentially very dangerous in the real world. Some day a really vicious contagious disease will come along, the media will hop up and down about how dangerous it is, and people will just tune out. Crying "Wolf!" is not kind on people's psyches, and could have catastrophic consequences in the future.

This whole thing about the “pandemic” is getting a little silly, IMO.

I heard on the news that some conservative elements in Israel no longer want to call it “Swine Flue” (because of dietary laws) but, rather, “Mexican Flu”. That got the Mexican Ambassador in Tel Aviv riled up and issued a formal protest. The people in the Gaza strip have proclaimed that this is an “Israeli Matter”, but are clearly delighted at the rift.

In the U. S., apparently because of pressure from the pork producing industry, the pig farmers have convinced President Obama to refer to it as “H1 N1”.

To me that looks too much like “HiNi” so that it should be pronounced, “Hiney”. The media and politicians are going to trivialize this flu outbreak to death, I think.

I think the media and politicians have just given us more justification that what they need is a severe kick in the H1N1.

Apologies for being a little pedantic, Bill, but I think it would be more accurate to describe the behaviours of the media pundits and political spin merchants as 'sensationalisation', not 'trivialisation'.

Anyone who's really interested should actually check out the number of swine flu "confirmed deaths" in Mexico. They're only in double figures. Indeed, according to RTÉ TV news bulletins today, the three-figure fatality numbers quoted earlier in the week were actually only referring to fatalities for which swine flu was the "suspected" cause. Again, according to the same news bulletin, even the number of swine flu "suspected fatalities" has been reduced by nearly 100!

And people wonder why I don't trust the stuff that's fed to us by The System...

Influenza A(H1N1) - update 9
2 May 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve. As of 06:00 GMT, 2 May 2009, 15 countries have officially reported 615 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

Mexico has reported 397 confirmed human cases of infection, including 16 deaths. The 241 rise in cases from Mexico compared to 23:30GMT of 1 May reflects ongoing testing of previously collected specimens. The United States Government has reported 141 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (34), China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1), Denmark (1), France (1), Germany (4), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (4), Republic of Korea (1), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (13).

Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.
