25% increase on glass?

Hi all, I have just recieved a letter from my current glass supplier who informs me glass prices will rise by 25% from May 2010.....After i called them they told me every glass supplier in the uk will be doing the same. Has anyone else heard of this as it seems to be quite a hike and will cost me approx 1500 pounds a year more ......I would love some feedback from any one thanks.........

I think a large part of the cost of glass is the cost of shipping. My cost for oak has risen sharply in the last few months - many container ships are "parked up" due to the recession leading to price increases. Added to that there is also the pound / dollar rate - the pound has weakened a great deal recently too.

So this double whammy has caused the price increases. That said I pay much the same for glass now that I did 5 years ago!

Price increases seem to be happening regularly these days. The only thing that's not rising is my income!

Price increases for the next year or so are more or less a direct result of the downturn/recession (lower production worldwide of products) ….and low interest rates which is now causing inflation, I have seen the exact same thing more or less in the past, 80’s and early 90’s as economies start to pull out of recession.


The UK £ in particular is going to be very vulnerable to price increases from US$$ and € Euro sourced products ……glass is virtual with exception sold into the market place from factories in US $$$.....hence the price increases at present.

You obviously buy a lot of glass. Could it be possible that the deal you have negotiated in the past simply cannot be sustained by your supplier?

Possibly the supplier has absorbed a few smaller increases to keep your business.

I think float glass is about half the price it was 20 years ago.
It will mean the sheet price will increase by about 60p- I reckon my customers won't even notice!

I have just ordered a batch through my supplier - Solidglass of Goole. The price has risen sharply due in part to the ex factory price rising for the reasons given above and partly due to the increase in carriage charges from China. For the next few months they are not publishing prices with a view to reducing the price as soon as possible, although he cannot see any reduction in the near future, indeed it will probably rise further until the £ begins to strengthen. Mind you, I am still paying less for my glass now than I was in 1988, so it can't be too bad!

We get our glass from Ventons in the southwest and have just ordered some float glass with a increase of 5% since our last order about 5 Months ago with a expected increase of 17% in May

Unfortunately price increases during our present economic climate are almost inevitable and a necessary part of the ongoing survival of both manufacturers and our distributors.

However, 25% all in one hit sounds a bit heavy. Naturally, we will have to make adjustments, but I hope those adjustments won't include our suppliers trying to force us to accept rubbish glass from China.

Price is a problem, but rubbish glass is a far worse problem!

We don't have many problems with our current supplier, infact the 2mm float has been consistantly good and we get good service. We have had problems with other suppliers in the past but if they deliver carp glass then we start to look for a replacement supplier.

oh dear - silly me - glass -there is a subject - how do you know what is pilkington and what is eastern european or chinese or just whataa you call carp! i always have pilkington (i think) but what REALLY is the difference.

Most of the glass as far as I’m aware produced in the Far East is manufactured on plants that would have originally been designed by Pilkington….

I don’t think Pilkington have produced glass suitable for picture framing for years……

In fact I don’t think there is a glass plant anywhere in Western Europe producing plain float picture framing glass these days……….
