Adjustable magnetic underpinner clamp pad from Lion

I've just taken delivery of an adjustable magnetic underpinner clamp pad from Lion to use on my Cassesse CS-88. It's already proved it's self while joining a difficult deep scooped moulding, which I normally find hard work to clamp and join.

If anyone has been wondering about getting one, well I'm glad that I did.

Bit off the topic but i've always been impressed with lion - both service sales range advice second to none IMHO - virtually everything i have was supplied by lion - fantastic company.

Superb addition to the Cassese. Not only is it easy to adjust which bit of the moulding they press on to, it also means you can throw away that funny hinged spacer thingie for thin mouldings if you have a CS88.

Somebody on the forum gave me a tip to cover the felt pad with Lion's foam bumpers to protect it from glue. The bumpers can easily be renewed if they get worn or covered in glue. If you let glue dry on the felt it can become very hard and mark the moulding.

Still, Lion do sell replacement felt pads. I'm not sure what they use to stick the felt to the metal bit and I've not been able to get a good bond with the replacement I tried. Still, they also sell replacement metal bits with attached felt pad. Neither of these are in the catalogue - you need to ask.

I've had one of these for at least 8 years if not more and the original felt pad is still going strong. As Welsh framers says though it is worth protecting the felt, but if you do manage to get a bit of dried glue on it i've found a light sand down with a bit of abrasive paper usually does the trick.

I have a home-grown pad which I made for use with my Euro pinner. It's covered with cork as a cushion and to stop it getting gunged up with hardened glue, I put a few turns of Handywrap around. If that gets glue on it, it's easy to strip it off and put a new layer on.

I guess you're a tidier worker than I am. Some days I manage to get glue everywhere. Sandpaper sounds a good idea.

Any tips for getting glue off jumpers and trousers?

Prosperos idea of keeping glue of the pad is excellent but how do you stop glue from seeping from the underside of the moulding down into the firing pin mechanism: ie where the wedges come up through.

Hi,

I brought one 6 weeks ago and its a excellent piece of kit. Not only great for joining ueven mould but you don't have to use that stupid piece of bendy metal when joining small moulding just slide the pad forward and bingo. I've infact bought another since and replaced the felt pad with firm rubber for hardwood and works just as good. It is part No. 316 and is £26.50 but worth every penny.

That sounds like a good idea. I wonder if Lion would consider also offering a rubber pad version too!
