A survey that compares how we've applied technology such as matcutters/cmcs, pricing/POS systems, visualization, internet access, websites, etc A brief comparison of backup procedures and computer security.
We're doing it again, but with different software that doesnt require grumble registration to participate. The new software is a bit better and makes sure no one is voting more than once, etc.
Thanks for the link Mike, to yet another fascinating poll on The Grumble.
What I find interesting is that while we embrace technology and are convinced that we probably would not survive without it, it must be acknowledged that there are many very successful framing businesses out there that seem to get along quite well without the POS, CMC, visualisation etc., that seem so indispensable to us.
Indeed. Technology is just a tool, like a CMC or VNAILER.
A pos system saves the shop a lot of time that would normally be used adjusting prices, calculating prices, taxes, commissions, monthly and yearly sales comparisons, consignments, inventory control, gift/art item management, etc. The most valuable feature is probably the weekly pricing updates. When a price changes, BAM, you have it reflected within a day or so. When a moulding is discontinued, you have a printout reminding you to remove it the same week. Customers are also less likely to haggle and trust a computer generated price more than a hand calculated one.
For folks in the UK, ESTLITE is a top notch product.
I think frame shops in the USA, UK, AU and NZ are leading the way in this regard. Jim Miller wrote an interesting article about this topic in the Feb 2006 Picture Framing Magazine.
