Mounting cigerette cards

Post by rhiannon framing »

I have been asked to frame 8 old cigerette cards. The cards need to float flush on the backing mountboard and then I will put a mount around the 8 as one apature. Any suggestions how I attach the cards to the backing mountboard accurately with conservation materials.

I haven't framed any cigarette cards for years.

We used to cut the windows square (without any bevel) with the window a mm or so larger than the card, then place the cards carefully in the mount with glass front and back, so the pressure of the glass on both sides kept the cards in place - no tape or adhesives used. For more than just a few cards we would buy the mounts in die cut - I think Lion used to sell them but we usually got them from a specialist supplier - we told them which brand of card they were and they supplied the mounts with the correct sized windows. I think the supplier was Victoria frames in Runcorn (or Widnes) - we used to get 9 Half pints of the law series by Jedd from them too. I think they have now closed down though, so that was a bit of useless information, but I am sure a google will find someone who can still supply die cut mounts.

If the mat opening is around all eight of the cards, Mylar/Melinex corners might be a good solution.

Lineco ready made corners can be purchased or you could make them yourself from strips of mylar. The shape and method of folding can be seen at this site: http://tinyurl.com/29xkzud

You can't encapsulate 8 separate things in one go, they'd just all slip down to the bottom and if you encapsulated them individually you'd not be able to butt them up against each other, plus, without a multiple aperture mount, would see the double-sided tape that sticks the sheets of melinex together

If you use corner pockets they'd need to be tiny and you'd see all 32 of them, plus lining up would be a nightmare.

Do the cards have borders and if so, what's the problem with a multiple aperture mount with the 'bars' between apertures just a tiny bit wider than two borders next to each other?

If this, for whatever reason, is not an option and you also don't want visible methods, like corner pockets, you're going to have to use some sort of adhesive, pass through hinges might be the best conservation option but you're still applying adhesive, be it wet paste or self adhesive, to the info/provenance on the back of the cards and they might still not lay perfectly flat anyway.

I'd give the customer 2 options -

1. A multiple aperture mount with the cards mounted in one of several ways.

2. Scan and print the cards laid out as required and dry mount that.
