Notice board?

Hi all,

Despite not taking part, I regularly read the different topics posted and have found them very useful. I am hoping that you will be able to help me. I have been asked to quote for a notice board (overall size 7’ x 4’, but can be made in two/three pieces). I need to know where I might be able to buy the actual board. The customer would like ‘blue velvet type’ rather than cork.

Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated.

Hi Anne.

Most builders merchants will have 8' sheets of fibreboard. It's just the stuff for notice boards.

There is a product called Sundeala board, Wessex do it in grey, but you can get it from some builders merchants and panel suppliers in various colours.

stock sheet size is 8' x 4' so big enough for your job, and its about 13mm thick.

and its 100% recycled!

DON'T USE FIBREBOARD!!!! I did, and now I have a school with 6 big boards and there are several thumbtacks on the floor under them at any one time. Not good. I need to return and stick something on over the fibreboard which will retain the tacks in a better fashion. First thought was cork sheeting or tiles, but I am encountering some trouble sourcing them. Someone gave me a sample of a synthic cork sheet which would work, but they forgot where they got it! Can anyone help?

Use cork floor tiles on a sheet of 12mm ½” MDF and cover it with blue velvet cloth.

When you glue the cork tiles to the MDF sand the cork tile surface to key it and then use a good quality PVA glue to attach the cloth.

What I would do is put a good coat of PVA glue on, let it dry and then put another light coat on and then attach the cloth, this way if the glue dries to much (to soon) before you get the cloth all on (in place) you can then use an hot (not to hot) iron to attaché the areas that did not stick.

In fact you could iron the whole lot a few hours after attaching the cloth to get a nice even look to the cloth.

That is quite a big notice board you should give some consideration to the moulding you use.

A 4ft wide piece on shipping from the UK should not be very expensive.

Another good option for gluing fabric is EVA. It can be activated with heat from a clothes iron, especially if it you don't get the fabric on while the glue is still wet. I use Frank's Fabric Glue from USA, which is excellent, but you should be able to get EVA. It looks exactly like PVA.

Thank you to all – I don’t have to start this project until mid September and am going to all. I had a look at the fibreboard and was having misgivings. I was going to look online to see if there was anything suitable. Will follow up on your leads. How do you all feel about foamcore with cork glued on to it?

Dermot, Thanks for warning re size. I planned and agreed with customer that it will be in three parts, butting together to look like one.

i have never done these before, but did used to work in education where i would buy them all the time etc

and i dont see where there is any money to be made, maybe i am missing something

if the customer compares with off the shelf products from one of the many suppliers would you be able to compete on price etc?

i havent looked into it, but i am interested to see if its a worthwile market

I had no problems using 22mmx22mm plain ash on 8ftx 4ft sheets as they are fixed to the wall using brass plates. There were some the same size there already for the last 30 years without any problems. Thanks Dermot for the heads up on sourcing the cork sheeting.
