Groom Stick HELLLLP!!

Post by Gesso&Bole »

Anyone use Groom Stick for cleaning marks of mounts and prints?

Well I do, and have always found it effective and easy - Until this evening. Just framing a signed Quentin Blake print, and there was a tiny tiny mark on it, so I reached for the Groom stick to clean off the mark, and the rubber Groom stick has just stuck to the surface of the print, which is some sort of textured hand-made paper. It will not pull off cleanly, and using more groom stick just sticks more on there.

Anyone got any ideas? Groom Stick is rubber, so maybe cooling it down?

Any help appreciated, I'm anticipating a sleepless night over this one, as I don't think the print is replaceable . . . . .

I'm sure that you have thought of this one, but, looking at the photo, can you not cut a new mount cutting inside the marking!??

The signatures look as if they are on the print and not the mount.

Jim,
I have no idea what a groom stick is but I learned many years ago not to touch anything on the surface of anyone's art. It will almost always bite you on the behind, quite hard!

I stopped using Groom Stick for the very same reason: if it sticks it sticks like sh*t.

I seem to remember having some success in removing it with lighter fuel but freezing it might also work if you can avoid the art getting damp.

I"ve never used it but could a small piece of Scotch 811 tape help (used *horizontally* on the mark just in case...)? I agree with mitretight and maybe resize the frame a little.

Wise Words. :D I learned the hard way too. You might get away with it a few times, but all paper is different. Paper restoration is a very skilled job.

The only way to possibly rescue the situation is lighter fluid. Drop on a small spot and dab it (don't rub it) gently with a cotton bud. Let it evaporate and see if there is improvement. If there is, have another go.

(I've never heard of a groom stick either.)

Thanks for your help guys.

I have now stopped using Groom Stick too!

The customer wanted the print floated on to a white board to show the rough edges of the paper, but this is not now possible. I have cut a white double mount, and framed up the picture covering the damaged bit. It looks fab. I have 'phoned the customer and 'fessed up, now just waiting for them to come in. Hopefully they will like it more the way I have done it (I think it looks much better anyway).

I will let you know the outcome!

Jim, I would try getting your groom stick stuck on some scrap paper and then try the lighter fluid method. If it works with that, then you could offer your customer the option of trying it on the picture. It will be their choice then. Never heard of a groom stick either.

You could talk to the manufacturer of Groom Stick http://www.picreator.co.uk/articles/6_groom_stick.htm and see if they can offer any advice.
