extra thick mountboard

Post by Mrs C »

Hello Forum members, can you help me please with my mount cutting problem. I am using extra thick mountboard for the first time. It’s Arqadia 3500 mic and am trying TECH S 012 and TECH S 015 blades, kindly supplied by Keencut as testers. I have adjusted my blade depth, adjusted my end stops where necessary but no matter what I do, I am getting huge overcuts at the start of cut. And slight undercuts and the end of cut. I’ve adjusted the start of cut stops by about 5mm but it’s making no difference. Thankfully I’m only working on small test pieces just now, but will need to start for real soon. What am I doing wrong?

I know these boards can be tricky and a fellow framer that i know avoids them like the plague but my client has requested them and I do personally think they look good. Any advice welcome.

You are doing the right thing by doing try-outs on scraps. On board that thick it's better not to try and do a cut in one go. Use a thinner blade and do it in two or even three cuts, advancing the blade with each cut.

This is a very long-winded process however so I would take Grahame up on his kind offer.

Graham that is most kind of you. I did wonder if any other framers were doing this using CMC’s.

I will take you up on your offer if that’s OK. Will call you tomorrow. Many thanks.

Mrs C,
I think Grahame will charge you double for spelling his name wrong! Isn't that right Grahame?

And for spelling 'spelled' wrong it will cost you quadruple and you will have to pay him with US currency - $20 notes to be exact!

we got MrsC sorted out!

After a bit of fiddling with the Valiani we managed to get there, (some of our screws were a little worn and it wasn't holding the blade cartridge in properly.)

Well yes, we (or rather you) did get there eventually Grahame with cutting the extra thick mountboard on the Valiani, but I was beginning to have my doubts!

I love the look of the board, but it is a bit of a nightmare to deal with isn’t it.

Thanks so much for your time and patience. Not to mention, generosity.

And now, if anyone wants to get back to bread-making ...

no problemo Carol,

Thankfully by the time i got sorted and out the traffic was really light and I made it home before the Missy - Just!

We cut thick stuff so rarely we tend to get out the groove - when you are cutting it all the time its more like second nature...

Now we hope you consider seriously the trip to the forum event in March 2011 - no excuses!

Luca ( VALIANI) is here with one of the busiest stands.

I was having an interesting chat until his Brazilian distributor arrived, and then he was engaged with a most interesting project to see
if the Valaini will cut 3 mm corrugated boards to make Museum quality storage boxes.

I always say " What do you learn if you dont come to an exhibition? NOTHING"
