Large perspex

Had a customer in with a print 6 feet x 3 feet, does not want glass, any idea who supplys sheets that large ?

we use a company called bridgeside plastics we've had a few large pieces of them.they might be able too help,they cut too size and deliver not sure what cost of that is.

There should a local to you sign maker... they usually use acrylic in 3m x 2m sheets... guess that size would be 3mm

Beware of getting perspex from a local sign maker - they dont tend to take enough care of it in handling and storage - so it can get dinged up so that it wont be good enough for putting in a picture frame - this damage can sometime be difficult to fully appreciate until you have removed the protective layers, - probably dosent matter that much to them when its put on elevated signs -
We received a sheet cut to size from a local sign guy but couldnt use it due to surface damage - when we went back to them , we had great difficulty selecting an undamaged portion of a sheet that was Ok - as they simply dont take enough care of it when handling and storing.
Since then we get it only from a perspex specialist who take great care of it and fully understands the picture framer's need for a perfect unbleamished surface - in fact they only deliver it with their own transport to ensure adequete quality. It also costs a lot less from them.

A customer supplied their own perspex for a really big picture. They got it at Wickes, the DIY superstore.

I would try Glass and Mirror, or from them via your local Wessex branch. They have a good selection of Styrene, acrylic, etc. stocked in large sizes, and even larger sized clear cast acrylic to special order.

Arqadia do extruded acrylic at about £26 a 6 x 4 foot sheet I think. Only sell it in packs of 5 though - would it be useful for you to have some in? Virtually indistinguishable from glass in appearance and thick enough not to bow severely. Not like some of the plastic you see in cheap shop pictures that's all wavy and looks ghastly (sometimes they use 700 micron polyester!)

From memory it is 2mm thick - there is some argument that 3mm would be better for that size - it depends if you dry mount the picture and use a double mount there would probably be no contact with the print. It is "UV stabilised" which means it will not turn yellow quickly in light like some plastics can (allegedly).

£74 for a sheet sounds like that may be cast acrylic. That is a bit clearer and better for high end 10mm thick applications. For normal picture thickness 2- 3mm a high quality extruded is absolutely fine. I have a few van suppliers I can call on in north yorkshire and one of them sticks 3mm too.

I have tried styrenes which are cheaper but I find they often have specks in and at large sizes you can often see striations in the material from an angle.

If you get to buying lots you can get better deals on plastic but if it's a one off it won't be worth your while using them. I've found a great one but it took me 4 years and over 5 changes of supplier to get there - so buggered if I'm going to tell everyone and make it easy! lol

amari plastics they do every acrylic you can think of!! they do delivery also and have branches around the uk! call there NW london branch for info 0208 961 1961 we use them all the time!! hope this helps
