Framing poetry

Post by lyndyloo »

Hi all.

I'm thinking of being a bit creative with my framing and one of the things I'm considering is ready made box frames incorporating poetry and a relevant item - e.g. a poem about a new baby with a pair of miniature bootees or something. My question is - if I use somebody elses poetry, does this infringe copyright law or if I show their name am I ok? :?

thanks
Lynda

Good question, and I don't know. Having said that if it was another piece of creative work, drawing, photo or painting and you were reproducing it then it would be a definate yes so I guess it would apply to writing as well.

The other thing to keep in mind is that copyright is time limited, can't remember exactly how long but there is a lot of poetry that is out of copyright that you could use without problem. Also if there was a modern poem you wanted to use just ask the author I'm sure most would be happy to have their material used, maybe in exchange for a sample or some free framing? Depends on the quantities I suppose.

always a good one - illuminate the letters at the start of each verse - sells well

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
when all is said and done - there is more said than done.

looks like 70 years from death of the author for literary work copyright.

Has been some odd exceptions made by Parliament e.g. Peter Pan should have expired by now but the government extended it and all royalties go to charity I read.

Poets are always struggling to get into print. Why not track down a some local ones and if you like thier work you could offer to frame the work and pay the poet a small fee if they sell. Just a thought?
