Morso F Measuring Arm?

Post by fraggle »

Hi,

I have finally got around to setting up my second hand Morso F. I checked the copy of the (Lion) invoice that they had for it when they purchased it and it states "1500mm engraved metric scale" but there are no measurements (engraved or otherwise) on the top or side of the sliding scale, only ones stuck on the main "platform" area of the right hand arm.

Am I being dense or do I need to order another measuring arm?

Thanks
Fraggle

I have taken some photos but how do I insert them?!!
Thanks!!

To attach an image, see the column on the left side of the forum, under Resources, click How to include an image in your post.

(BTW J2M, the 800 pixel restriction no longer applies.)

If you have the engraved arm ( on the bed of the arm) that makes it the equivalent of the De Luxe model so that is all the measurements you need.

If it is the engraved scale that you have, then use the mitred moulding itself to read off the measurement you need (the bit of the moulding that is flat on the bed, not the rebate), then move the sliding scale to meet the moulding to set the length to repeat the cut

Yes that's the engraved scale. So if you want a glass size of 450mm for example just put the mitred end of the moulding to where the base of the moulding meets the diagonal line from the number 45. Measuring done! The stop can then be moved to meet the moulding and be set for repeat cuts.

Hi Fraggle,

What a nice, shiny, new Morso!

I have not used a Morso scale like this, but Jim's post above explains the method.

You simply move your moulding along the engraved scale, until the outer edge of the rebate is lined up with the size you want to cut, then move the shiny metal slider until it meets the moulding, then chop away.
Sorry, I find it difficult to write how to do this, a picture would say it better

Thanks everyone, it is a relief to know there are not parts missing as they are not cheap!

I was confused as the one I had previously used had a bit that you set to the width of the moulding and the photo in the Lion catalogue also looked like this hence the confusion!

I can now have a go at chopping at the right length as I am getting a nice clean cut with it - it cuts a perfect V even in a single sheet of paper

Can anyone recommend a good oil as a few bits e.g. the (rebate supports - sorry, not sure what you call them) are a bit stiff? It says acid free in the manual. Is something like Castrol oil OK?

Also, the rebate supports just have the roughened kind of wide washers to adjust the height which are a bit of a fiddle, can you buy the longer "arms" to attach to them as I found these easier to use, although it may just need a bit of oil.

Once my Morso is sorted I have to tackle setting up my Cassese 88 underpinner so I may be back for tips on that soon!

Thanks again everyone

PS the only thing I wonder is the accuracy down to the last mm as the scale is divided into what looks like 2.5mm breaks....should this be an issue?

thanks

No, I have the vernier scale and it's in increments of 5mm, you just judge it, erring on the side of caution.

Hi Roboframer, I've never seen a vernier scale on a Morso. The three that I have owned have all had direct reading scales.

The vernier sounds interesting, any chance of a photo?

I can take a photo of mine tomorrow (drat, I'll have to clean the bloody thing now) meanwhile here's the charnwood PDF manual - page 14 - the Morso system is just the same.

The measurements are 2.5.Take the moulding to the required size and just move the moulding to the next line ie. 2.5 and that will be your mount and glass size.

Thanks Roboframer.

It is an interesting picture. I think you must have an older machine than I have seen before, it looks more robust than the later models which have more aluminium.

Disappointingly however I'm not seeing a vernier, just a straight measuring scale.

Perhaps Morso erroneously refer to it as a vernier? I don't know as I've never seen a manual.

I think the 'vernier' part is because both the sliding part and the fixed part both
Have scales. You line up the rebate adjustment (eg 25mm) on the sliding
Arm with the required length (eg 300 mm) on the fixed scale. I.e vernier not linier.

I see how you might have come by that mistaken notion Abacus, and you appear to be in good company. Roboframer’s Morso scale does look a bit like a vernier in that there are two scales, a fixed one and a sliding one. But there the similarity ends.

The layout and function of a vernier is completely different. This website illustrates how a real vernier works.
