Lack of Stickies

Post by Madwolfie »

This may be a shot in error or even in the dark, but are there any stickies ??

I think it would be great for all of us fairly new to framing itself, to be able to find (for example) - 1. How to set up a Morso, 2 How to adjust a Morso, 3. How to calibrate a Keencut Gold etc etc.

There are several threads with similar topics searching and reading all the replies (some of which are irrelevant and way off topic - takes ages) and if the definitive replies could be merged into a guide which is stuck at the top of the Forum listing - to get a helpful bunch of notes for the starter - we could all progress onto more advanced things more quickly afterwards.

I think most people come to framing by buying secondhand equipment with no manual, so I reckon this would be handy for a lot of people.

I know I could have done with it a year or so ago :( It has taken me two years to find out something that has changed the way I make frames with no gaps - Thanks Prospero and you too Peter !!

cheers

it isn't the lack of stickies that is the problem, it's the constant number of irrelevant replies, and original posts in totally the wrong categories that hamper usability. - for example this post should have been in the Forum Issues, and some of the long winded, cromulent, pseudo technical conservation debates about mountboard belong in Outgassing, fina art trade guild battering belongs in business matters, promoting products/services/brands belongs in sales and wants......
perhaps a moderator will move this to forum issues?

The problem with 'stickies' Colin, is that there are far too many important topics that may be deemed worthy of this treatment.

I have seen many boards where the number of stickies are such that you have to scroll quite a way down in order to view any active content.

We actually have a much better solution in place, called The Framing Oracle (see the link to the upper left of any page in the forum), where members can pool their knowledge to create a resource similar to Wikipedia - but for framers.

Sadly the Oracle has been neglected of late, mainly the fault of the forum administrator, who didn't bother to verify, after a software update, that members still had editing rights. So nobody has actually been able to contribute for the last two years.

Since you have so recently gone through the experience, how would you feel about putting together a 'What Every Beginner Should Know' guide for the Oracle with links on where to find that essential information?

Open the link to the Oracle, click the edit tab of any page and log in using your forum name and password. The left hand column will then have links to "Basic Editing" and "Content Guidelines" which will help to get you under way.

John

Would love to, just a question of time, I paint all day and frame in the evenings so not a lot of that commodity around ATM - but I will give it some thought as it is so fresh in my mind now.

Jan - Pete has a been a great help and I will bear it in mind - sadly I am in Scotland, so the prospect of driving to Norfolk (other than the bird life of course) seems a little far fetched considering the above comment, when you are self employed you tend to focus on earning first. I realise now that if I had had the training when I first set up the workshop, it would have saved some heartache. But it is running now, just a few minor adjustments to make. I suppose what has made it worse is realising too late that the framers I had (before I was forced into starting my own workshop) were all self-taught and in framing I am not sure that is a good thing AT ALL ! So my knowledge (gleaned from them) was probably flawed. I have learnt so much since joining here.

This forum has restored my faith - not a great fan generally, but there does seem to be a good percentage of helpful people on this one.

Thanks to you all.

Totally agree with the gist of Kev's post (see what I did there, avoided using the quote facility :D )

A topic headed 'A Conservation Question' should absolutely be in the 'Outgassing' forum and (IMHO) the mods are not doing their job - were I a mod I would have shifted it there within minutes of it being posted.

Some moderators hardly ever visit the forum; I reckon I'd make a great moderator, I'd insert the obscenties you really wanted to insert and ban you for being too tame.

OK

I see now - well sort of, I think for the Oracle to work it should be absolutely clear that it is a resource of information. Most of us using the web are used to little square (or oblong) boxes at the left or right of a forum being adverts (it is under one for Facebook after all) so to me it is not clear at all that the Oracle is not an advert or what it does do, so I am less likely to click on it. It will only work when it is constantly being updated - I had a quick look, but not a lot of it had info.

As for the other comments, well I wanted the original post i.e, the one titled 'Lack of Stickies' to be seen - if I had sent it to Forum it may not have been seen by enough people.

The FF would seem to be in need of an new admin - judging by the much more informed posters to this thread, how does that get actioned ?

To solve the 'too many topics' problem, would it not be best to have a 'beginners' or 'searching for answers section' then ?

Irrelevant replies is what hampers most forums, that is why I usually don't bother, but FF has restored some of my faith.

Cheers

FF members have different ways of doing different things(some are right, some are not wrong etc.)The search facility will get most beginners questions, and the onus is then on you.
IMO the oracle is very sparse because a lot of subjects there are many differing ideas or methods .

If all else fails contact
http://www.morso-guillotines.dk/
they will send you a manual if you quote your machines serial number.

And here's one for keencut manuals
http://www.keencut.com/uk/manuals.aspx

Why are you in such a rush, use the search facility and sort the wheat from the chaff yourself.

All the best

At the risk of adding another post slightly off topic...

I do have the manuals, but that was not my original point, more to seek information from professional users of the equipment with tips and advice.

I know it has helped me browsing the forum, but it would also help if the info was collated into a place where it was more easily findable ! Hence the stickies post.

There's 3 places framing advice could be given/asked for.

General discussion
Help
Outgassing.

I think it would make searching easier if these were merged in to one forum.
