Hanging a frame in a Bathroom ?

Post by Bagpuss »

A customer asked me today if there's any such thing as "Suction Hook", basically she wants to hang a frame on the wall of fully tiled bathroom, short of drilling a hole, do you know of anything she could use to hang a frame on a tiled wall ? It's the first time I've been asked that.

Here you go - click

Seriously though - my satnav is on a "locking" suction hook, but in hot weather I sometimes find it in the footwell. We have a handle on the wall of our bog attached with two large "locking" suction hooks, my ancient M.I.L. can lower herself on to/get herself off of, the loo with it, (apols for the image that may conjur) but sometimes we find that on the floor too - never seems to give when she's using it though, which is a shame.

They suck! Not for long-term application, one day it's gonna give.

Ask the customer what the towel rails, soap dishes, shower fixtures, cabinets etc are fixed to the tiles with and sling her a HD picture hook and a rawlplug.

If it is not to big silicon will probably hold it bit you will need to cover the back of it and hold it in place whilst it goes off. One of the tricks used to hold pictures in pub toilets. :giggle: :giggle:

How about this......

You can get plastic hooks with a sticky foam pad on the back. They stick really well and can support a lot of weight. The more you use, the less strain on each one.

But.....

Sooner or later they are likely to fail. A sneaky way is to use two and then put two more next to them but maybe 1/2" lower. The weight is taken on the higher pair. The other two are 'catchers'.
The idea is to create a failsafe whereby if a hook gives the one below (which has never been under strain) will catch the cord. So if they go in the room and the picture has gone crooked, they know the hook has failed and it can be replaced.

My solution would be to drill the tile  Don't think I would trust those suction cups :sweating:

But if this was absolutely not allowed then 3M VHB tapes are specifically designed for applications where you can't use rivets, screws or other fixings. Similar to Prospero's idea really, I would use aluminium hooks stuck with VHB tape or for a large frame use strips of Z bar hangers.

I think Lion do a similar tape, although I would want to see the data sheet before using it, as there are lots of different types.
3M have a varied range for most applications.

You would have to be mad to use a suction cup. They could drill a hole through the tile - tip - put tape over it first and then drill - very carefully - you dont want to crack a tile, then use a raw plug etc.

If this is something framed with glass - and the bathroom doesn't have an extractor fan - then they may get moisture / condensation issues. Which reminds me - I need to paint the kitchen with kitchen and bathroom paint - as the previous owner didn't.

Second though - they maybe able to use the same things they use in Estate Agent windows - like a wire on hooks from the ceiling - if you know what I mean

I do, it's what I use for my window display, Lion sell them, but I don't think they'd look too clever running from floor to ceiling in a bathroom, or any other room.
