Slip mounts - would you use them?

Normally I hinge mount my prints but having recently spoken to a couple of pro togs on the subject of mounting photos both of them mentioned that they actually use slip mounts such as the ones in the link

I'd appreciate your thoughts on these vs hinge mounting as they certainly seem a more convenient and less time consuming way of presenting photographs

They probably use them for convenience because they can't be bothered to properly hinge mount a photograph. I notice they are only available in cream core so they won't look good for long.

I don't see from that link how those mounts offer a different method of attaching a photo - they're just mounts?

Seems that they call them 'slip' mounts because they slip in to standard sized frames.

I'm assuming they have a backing board (of dubious lineage no doubt) tacked to the back of the mount so that the photo is gripped along the sides. I slight improvement on the usual die-cut ones. Its an expedient method that may be OK for low value 'snapshots'.

Not sure - prices are on a par with the same sized non 'slip in' mounts in other areas on their site.

Off topic a bit - from that site "Cream core mount boards are made from virgin wood pulp, which has a characteristic Pale Ivory colour. Each board is pH neutral and meets the Fine Art Guilds approval for standard mount board".

Makes it sound like good stuff, doesn't it!

I have made some of these for people who are amateur photographers and members of a club where they get to exhibit an image or two every month - not in a frame , just mounted and pinned to a display board - easy to slide in and out

These seem to me a temporary and budget way of mounting photos.

on the same level as those dark blue mounts with a gold line you get on school photos.

slip mounts are used by event photographers

they print on site and slide the print into them, they are a temporary thing, print isnt ment to be framed in one of them

Is that why they stamp the title right on the edge and round the corners off?

The consensus seems to be then that I'm better off staying with the hinged mounts - thanks for the responses, decision made!!
