what tape?
I make Daguerreotype photographs which require sealing behind glass. In cross section I have the metal plate .5mm thick , a paper gasket (to keep glass away from plate) and the glass. What I have been doing to seal the edges to stop oxidisation of the plate was to tape it. I originally used insulating tape, but I have noticed on the museum glass I use that it peels off the glass after a few months. It doesn't matter what the tape looks like as it is all hidden behind a window mound. There can only be about 3mm of the tape showing on the front of the glass.
Anyone recommend a conservation tape for this?

Try Filmoplast P-90. It sticks like the proverbial to glass.

Sounds like an application for aluminium foil tape. Given a good burnish the acrylic adhesive will adhere very well to the glass, and the aluminium layer is as effective gas barrier as you will get.

Re: what tape?
Do you know if the adhesives are 'conservation' quality on either of these tapes as the adhesive will be touching the edge of the plate, all be it in a very small way?

I can do that, bigger glass if it is being framed, but if people want them in a case it makes it harder as in means the case has to get bigger, and the surround, which traditionally is quite narrow.

I'm confused!

So why is the spacer a 'paper' one now instead of a brass one and why are you looking for a tape for the sealing when you already had a heating method?ceebdub wrote:Just so you all know how a Daguerreotype image works . The image is on a silver plate it then has a brass spacer and a sheet of non reflective glass on that. The whole thing is heated and sealed around the edges(hopefully for ever) So what you have is a unit that is metal, metal glass in section. The edge is messy so has to be hidden, there is no other way of doing it.

Re: what tape?
the heating is not a method, just a way of making sure its not damp inside the enclosure. After that the edge needs sealing. I either use a paper or a brass gasket to keep the silver plate from touching the glass.
