Mount Cutting Challenge

Post by Jonny2morsos »

I have an old lady who brings me in a fair number cross stitch and needlepoints. The latest was a cross stitch, celtic cross and along with the finished item she brought in the image of the finished article on the cover of the instructions. See below:

I think I have done a fair job of replicating this. See below:

We agreed on the narrower moulding and smaller reveal of the yellow under mount which is Colourmount 304, Sand, with a top layer of Colourmount 342, Oxford Blue. For some reason it is 10mm wider than its height. The mount was cut on my Valiani CMC having designed the outline in Corel Draw and converted to a .plt file. The shape was created by overlaying two rectangles and a circle and using the "weld" function to make one continuous outline.

Very nicely done, may I ask what you charged for the mount?

Not as much as I should have done! I just charged for normal double mount and treated the design time as a learning exercise but on the agreement that she let me do the job once the Christmas rush was over.

I am no expert in Corel Draw so will write down the process involved in the design tonight before it goes out of my head.

Nice job J2M, it all take time when designing, I now charge a nominal fee starting at £5.00 for converting a design to a cutting file (this on to of the normal cost of the mountcard charge), it's not just the time in CorelDraw, you have to do test cuts as well.

Fantastic design j2m. Just shows what you can do with a little skill on corel draw.

However for those of us lacking that skill and who own a trucut, that design is a standard corner design :giggle:.

Having had a little more time to think about it (Xmas rush over) and looked into areas of the Valiani software I don't use much I could have probably adapted a standard corner or created a new one without using Corel Draw.

Next time I get a similar job I will try both ways and see which is better.
