Cost of plain 2mm glass in Australia

I moved to Melbourne last year from the Uk and have just started to think about setting up my framing again. I have phoned several glass suppliers in Melbourne and needed a drink and a lie down after being told the cost. I can't believe that glass is that expensive here and was wondering if anyone in the forum could give me an indication of how much I should and should not be paying for plain 2mm glass.

I was once demo'ing anti-reflective UV glass to a rather hard-of-hearing customer. He reeled a bit at the price and asked why can't they make it in this country. Why does it have to come all the way from New Zealand? *

I don't know what Glass costs in England but would be surprised if there was that much difference. Would love someone to PM me and let me know what framers play for glass up there in Britain.

£2.75 + VAT based on 250 sheets. Glass has gone up significantly in the past 2 years. 2 years ago I was paying£2.00 a sheet

Is that for 4ft X 3ft Sheets? If so thats not too different to what we pay down here.

In the latest Wessex 2012 price list it's £4.99 + VAT

Sorry I should have said 4 x 3 . If I was to buy it from a local supplier 10 sheets at a time it would be £4.86 + vat per sheet.
