Framing photographs in humid environments

Post by tryhardframer »

So after many years of seeking answers from forums on all sorts of topics, technological to home improvments, I have been forced to actually join a forum in the hope of saaving my sanity :head:

I am a partner in a photography business, in the past year we have started framing our own images (for a number of reasons), however, living in a humid, tropical environment cockling is causing us a few issues.

We have tried t-hinging with 5mm linen tape, photo corners, spray adhesive (the stuff nightmares are made from!), double sided tape, tried mounting to the foam core, mat board, holding our mouth the right way, wrong way, but cannot completely escape cockling.

The thing that is so confusing is that some images (On lustre paper) from a pro lab are framed up completely fine, but others done the same way in the same temperatures have cockled.

I have dreamed up a device with two bits of hinge tape and a spring in the middle to keep the photo taut but allow stretch, is there anything like this on the market already (assume someone would have thought of this already!)

We have tried leaving a small space between the mat and the foam core and hinging the photo from the mat so it has 1mm of space to expand and contract, but we have had cockle lined appear from the top middle of the image.

Are any papers better in humid environments than others? are any framing techniques more successful?

Has anyone has any success with dry mounting in humid environments? or with pro labs printing and mounting to foam core... or to self adhesive foam core?

Would love to hear any advice on this topic.

Thanks :D

Had this problem while working in Bermuda. Depending on the value or rarity of each print, you could try laminating.
