Cassese CS199MXL Underpinner problem

Post by retropic »

I use a Cassese CS199MXL underpinner which has an annoying habit of jamming.

Towards the end of a cartridge of v nails it almost invariably jams a nail in the block, which means the block has to be removed, taken apart, cleaned regreased etc with virtually every cartridge. Sometimes it removes the hammer driver too, so this then has to be relocated. I can't imagine this is normal behaviour and was wondering if anyone else has encountered the problem and has a solution. The only one I can think of is to remember and change cartridges before it reaches the end. Unfortunately, I seem incapable of remembering to do this, so it's not an ideal remedy. On a positive note, at least the block gets a regular greasing!

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I have no experience with cassese underpinners, I do however have alot of experience with machinery in general. If it only jams at the end of the cartridge it would suggest to me to be a weak spring.
I'msure others who know the machine will give you better advise.

Sounds like a weak spring to me too. The feed chute spring on mine (Euro 8000 series which is less complicated but same principle) has half it's length gunged up with glue which I can't easily get at to clean. So occasionally on the last few wedges It will jam. I have got into the habit of pull back the knob on the feed and letting go when I am getting near the end of a stick of wedges. This makes sure the wedge is well seated for the hammer to engage.

Or I just put some more wedges in behind. Oh wait, you can't do that on a them fancy Casesse contraptions..... :giggle:

Thanks guys. I shall have a look inside and try some silicon spray too (I have some silicon powder which I use on the Morso, would that work?). Oh and where am I supposed to squirt it?

A little spray down the channel where you put your cartridge should help the spring put a little more pressure on the wedges hopefully preventing jams .

Also make sure the channel is free from any debris.
