Fitting

Post by mike p »

Hi,
I know this is basic but what do people think is the best surface for fitting. ie. putting the picture & frame together?

I like router matting. Non slip, soft, and catches any bits and bobs which might damage the frame.

Carpet is good and cheap. Remember to brush it down when you have stripped something otherwise you could end up scratching something. Also very good when you need to bang your head when something doesn't go right. :head:

Welcome to the forum, Mike.

I think most framers do the final fitting on the same surface the glass is cleaned on and before I had what I now have I tried all the usual things.

I now have a few pieces of MDF painted black and covered in staggered lines of domed bumpers, the permanent one is 4x3 ft and the others come out for anything too big for that. They're easy to clean, show smears & flumbs up very well (bar the black ones), prevent the glass from sliding and also raise it above any debris that may scratch it, which is particularly good for acrylic & glass with fragile coatings. Ditto for face-down frames, but not all, sometimes I cover the board with a throw.

I use bubble wrap on top of the bench, and just give it a quick blast with the air gun to get and debris off if need be :D
