Back to normal speed here too.

However, I can't view active topics or use the search facility unless I'm logged in. Is this happeneing to anyone else?
Easy enough to always log in I know, but I was able to do it before. Is it anything to do with this:

The new SQL server made no difference to the forum's performance, it seems to have corrected itself somehow, probably because a bandwidth hog on our shared server has been moved.

In an effort to speed things up I disabled the search feature for guests and robots.

Next time I'm tinkering, I'll re-enable and see if it makes a noticeable difference.

John please don't try to fix what is no longer broke. First time I have looked for days due to the speed. Now perfect

I noticed it was very quiet while it was slow but even though it was slow it still worked, it wasn't 'down'.

Didn't put me off, I just did other stuff, like open other things in new windows, put the kettle on, wonder about the meaning of life .... etc, while I waited for pages to load. I think at worst, pages took 30-40 seconds to load.

Something like "You know who your friends are when .............."!

Sarah, you should have known that your sound advice about not fixing what ain't broke would be lost on a dedicated gadget freak like me. :) It was too late anyway, as I'd already set the wheels in motion, and in fact we have just migrated from Arizona to London this morning.

The forum now runs on its own dedicated server, rather than sharing one with over 1000 other domains.

The site has been quite nippy for this past few days, and if that level of performance could have been guaranteed, I would have been more than happy to let things remain as they were.

Lets hope that speed issues are now a thing of the past.

David, guest searches have been re-enabled.

Thanks John.

I was initially very wary of straying away from the simple shared hosting, control panel, type interface. But after the initial shock of the unfamiliar, it turns out that the basic set-up for the VPS is not really so different. I highly recommend the switch over to anyone struggling with a slow site - I wish I’d done it years ago. (A sentiment shared by many forum users, I’m sure)

It was only after the initial 10 hour upload of the web files (yes, really), and 50 minute upload of the database itself, that I discovered that there is a way to FTP remote to remote which is many times faster than doing it via a home connection, so even the physical relocation of the files needn’t be such a chore.
