Originals or not?

Re: Originals or not?
Hmmmmm.... Well portrait painters of old would sometime just paint the face and hands and delegate the rest to apprentices. Does a artist have to physically create a work in order for it to be considered "his" painting?
Napolean 'built' the Arc de Triomphe. He didn't lug all the stone or get up a ladder. He didn't even design it. He probably did pay for it.

Re: Originals or not?
I have read that Damien Hirst has a number of assistants all producing his 'originals' for him. Hirst just signs them and takes the cash. Nice work if you can get it.

Re: Originals or not?
guy that worked for me went to work for Hirst. They call them "technicians".
he's a forum member maybe he'll chip in to this thread when he gets back from his globetrotting, but on his behalf I'd say you are quite correct
lots of artists and sculptors just do the design and minions or other artisans make the "product". It depends where you feel the "creativity" is. In the design, or the execution.
