Trimming Glass - what is possible?

Post by RzB »

I have just started cutting my own glass from 4ft x 3ft, 1220mm x 915mm sheets. I'm using 2mm TruVue Water White AR.

I cut the glass on a bench using a Toyo Oil filled cutter. I'm getting excellent results so far - I just love how it goes ping and there you have it - a perfect cut!

I would obviously like to keep scrap down to a minimum. My question is - how narrow can I trim?

Many of my photographs are 600mm long - and the glass is 1220mm - so that leaves me with 20mm to trim off. Is that doable with the score and ping with the fingers method over say 600mm?

Thanks,
Roy

Cutting 20mm (3/4") or even 12mm is a snap -- pun intended
Cutting 6mm takes a bit more practice.

Jerome, many thanks for the response. It made me smile...

That's good news - I'm sure I'm going to be a bit tentative when I do it for the first time - this TruVue is a bit expensive! :-)

With practice you can shave 2mm off. Sometimes it will come off in one bit. :P
Snapping off narrow strips is a bit tricky. Get yourself a pair of glass-nibbling pliers. They have board, flat jaws. The way to use them is to grip lightly just on the waste side of the score line and pull. Don't twist. If you don't get a complete snap you can nibble of any stray bits this way. A diamond pad is handy for smoothing down any small sticky-out bits that are left.

You can lay the square edge at the edge of the glass and run the cutter down it, so it cuts whatever the width is from the edge of the cutter to the wheel (probably about 2mm). No need to be afraid of it. If it goes wrong it's usually because it isn't cut well enough so the cut is ragged, which is where the glass nibblers come in.
