We've used the foam backed fabric and glue method on boards in the past and usually ended up with patches where it comes away over time. The last lot we did we used the self adhesive version of the fabric sold by Arqadia and apart from it being a bit hair raising sticking it down on a load of 8ft by 4ft boards it actually was less stress than glueing. We put the whole lot under weight over a weekend before putting them on the wall. So far we've had no problems, no patches failing and they still look good as new.

oh by the way, same trouble with velcro, always nervous when one is removed and the customer has a cross stitch on the desk
