John,
These are two statements that are well worth some serious thought IMHO!

If there is confusion, perhaps we should all focus our thoughts back onto the 'main thing' - the 'front' and the 'inside'!

Robo. Sorry if I seem to be raining on your parade. :? Agreed, in most houses the climate is perfectly stable and even if the backs did bow they would go down again. But I like to consider the "what if " factor. The last thing you want is shoals of customers coming in complaining. Even one would be too many. Customers only see the outside of a frame and no matter how sound the inside construction a warping back is likely to give a bad impression. I would seriously consider testing some frames in extreme conditions before adopting the method as standard practice.

It takes a long time to gain a good reputation, which you obviously have, but very little time to spoil it.

'nuff said.

In my opinion this idea is not beaten yet. The bevelled black mountboard does not have to be glued to the frame at all, it only has to be flush and this is easy to accomplish with a simple change in thinking.

If the backing board is packed out to be flush with the back of the frame, then the mountboard can be glued to the backing board. The frame would be sealed with normal gummed paper tape, which would be hidden under the mountboard. If anything, it may be a little easier to do, because the glue application would be less critical in execution!

But what about dis-assembly by future framers?

Stuck to the frame you'd only wreck the dustcover - stuck to the back board you'd wreck that as well. If it's a deep rebated thing that you have had to build up to make flush, then that's OK - it would work, but how many jobs like that do we get?

Also only good for frames that are made flush in the rebate - not quite flush wouldn't work.

The same look can be achieved with thinner materials that would wrinkle or cockle rather than bow - but who wants wrinkling or cockling?

The question of what makes an aesthetically and physically successful dust cover is complex and worthy of further consideration.
I guess it's a case of you can't have everything. But as I said - this method, or something similar, I will use 'as and when'

This photographer lady is going to present the hotel with something that looks nice from any angle - that matters as they get to pick it up and examine it from all angles. (I guess she will have some makeup on and be dressed well herself)

She, another photographer who is going to produce some 'gallery wraps' of her work, and I, want this job - if I get it I'm quite prepared to do some back-pedalling once my foot is in the door.

Well, we got the job! Photographer lady rang me up squealng with delight - nearly put hereself into labour!

The hotel had asked several photographers to provide samples - seems the rest used whatever they could get or usually did from their regular suppliers of RMFs.

The original idea was to have some gallery wraps (Boxed canvas) and some framed. But now they have seen this they want more framed; maybe all. So no idea what this job is going to be worth now!

More decisions to be made in January.

Well done John.

We will all now be looking for the Rolls outside the Hotel in Coventry next February.

Seeing it. We will then know you have arrived.

Hi John,

Congratulations! I would have been disappointed if you didn't, it's a job to be proud of, literally STUNNING!

You should have a potentially "up and coming" photographer as a regular customer too! After this I don't expect she would ever go anywhere else.

A job very well done, in every aspect!

Well, if there is no helipad - and I refuse to abseil like I had to last year - I suppose the roller will have to do.

My lickle Arfur turns more heads than a roller - 'e's luverly 'e is.

I'd given up on this but she rang today, coming in Thurdsay to confirm exact measurements quantities and price.

Deadline is now June, so no pressure.

Well, still getting her act together, she came in with the overall frame sizes required and I had to explain that I'd need the photo sizes to price the inner frame plus working back from the frame to the photo would result, in most of the cases with a non standard sized photo.

Anyway FORTY NINE frames - all museum glass - this hotel is having a large extension and going for another star - a 'red star' whatever that is - and guess what? Photographer girl is pretty sure she'll get their other FIVE hotels. Oh Boy!

BUT - one of her samples I drymounted to artcare restore cockled - can't be doing with that - so questions to follow on H&T's!!

Hi John,

Great news and nice when all the planning and effort pays off. For me that's still one of the most stunning new ideas I've seen for a long time and a job to be proud of!

It got me thinking I can tell you.

Update - hmmmmmph!!

We've sorted out the sizes and I'm giving them exactly what they want on the o/a dimensions - they asked for another quote for standard glass and I thought 'uh-oh'

So I quoted - then I get an email from the photographer girl saying the orders will begin with 5 this week for next - uh-oh!

Discounts were based on one order from each supplier, one transaction from hotel, and all the work done in one hit, well, over a couple of days.

So emailed back - stated the above, also asked are these 5 for museum glass, and how about the rest?

I think we had both assumed different things. Anyway they wanted to reduce costs so are having standard glass on everything. There will be this batch of 5, then one of 12, then one of 21 then one of 11, all with a week to 10 days to complete. Many apologies, maybe two of the batches could be put together.

The order is now about £50% of the hand-rubbing-together original quote. Oh and only the last batch is being done in the L Juhl Ferrosa - the rest in a very nice deep brushed silver with a smaller version for the inner, not much less value.

Anyway, I took stock, just that batch of 21 would have warranted some sort of discount, what the hec, it's still a very good order.

So, I emailed back and said don't sweat it, let's just make them happy and work on their other hotels, also let me know which two frames are going in the bestest place and I'll throw in museum glass on them - see what effect that has on owners and punters alike.

Then I rang Simons to order the outer moulding - I already have 200 ft of the inner, even though they'd said it was out of stock until Apr 17!

With the 40' of the outer they had left in stock and the 20 I had, I've got JUST enough to do this first batch. The rest 'should' be in in 3 weeks time - I rang the rep to ensure it gets reserved for me in some way (Simons don't do back orders) He tells me he has done that, but, er, it MIGHT be an idea to ring up and check just before it comes in, when it comes in and after it comes in.

Arqadia do the same moulding, well, very similar, cheaper and not as nice - thought about getting the lot from them in one hit rather than depend on a dodgy backorder.

Out of Stock Until Apr 29! and the way stock has been at Arqadia of late I know what's going to be said on Apr 29 'Out of stock until May 15' Well, possibly not if I put 500ft on back order! But as I said, it's not as nice.

Oh Boy!

Hi John,

It's a real shame about them not going with the museum glass. Have they been told how much it will affect the final result.

There might still be some mileage in talking to them about this, after all if you are willing to throw in some museum glass on the better hotel, why not do all except one of the first batch in normal glass and throw in one only in museum glass so they can see the difference. If they want it on all of them, then they may agree to find a bit more cash if you are willing to do the right deal.

Of course I'm assuming it's the hotel which is doing this and not the photographer trying to squeeze a little more out of the middle for herself.

I've only dealt with the photographer and she's not taking any cut from the framing - or at least I don't think so - I will be invoicing the hotel; not her.

They also want 21 days Bacs and I've OK'd that.

Quite prepared to just keep them happy, then speak to them later, maybe at their grand opening, or later, but quite happy for the photographer to do the talking - don't want to go over her head.

Both learning in the world of corporate jobs - both learning from each other and earning too - no complaints - just hope my suppliers can be as rock steady as me!

We are only 'doing' the one hotel at the mo' - hoping to do the rest or some. Will throw in museum glass on two frames in the best location in this first hotel to see if that wins orders for more in other hotels or even from their customers.
