Are there any oversized mountboard suppliers?

Hi fellow framers...

Fairly regularly now we encounter the problem of having to float mount very large pieces of art and are getting VERY tired of the spliced mountcard technique... it's just not a very satisfying look.

We have come across super large mountboards several times now and cannot find a UK based supplier.

We are looking for something along the lines of 145 cm x 175 cm (57 x 69 inches).

Rising do some boards at 60 x 104 inches, but are only available here in Europe from Spain or Italy.

Any suggestions anyone???

Thanks!
Anna

I use large hand painted wooden fillets. I know its not a mount but gives the impression.

I have also had mdf machined with a bevel the jointed sanded and painted.

:D :D

Wessex have some Crescent stuff listed in 72x48" and 96x48". It's rag and only in white. Doesn't state the thickness.

Gawd knows what it costs per sheet. :?

But going by your req, even those are too small. I think if I were floating things that size I would put them on a stretched canvas. You can paint the bits that show then. Much more stable than card at that size and easier to handle.

at least you would get a few standard sheets out of the resulting middle bit :giggle: :giggle:

We use Alistairs method (wooden fillets) and they can be covered with Hayseed mount paper (self adhesive) which comes on a roll from Arqadia

Wodden fillets not so much use for float mounting though? Plus there'd be 4 joins instead of one splice which would defeat the object really.

I'd maybe still go for the splicing but then cover in fabric, in which case you could use any mount board, or foam board.

Can I ask who supplies those plain fillets, and are they available in varying sizes? I have a need for something similar right now!

Cheers

Tim

p.s. NVM - found something at Lion that'll do.......wish there was a facility to delete posts here - or rather that if there is, I wish I knew how to use it! :head:

There would be no joints if I had finished it and why would it be no good for floating you can build it up at the back it is no different to 3500micron mountboard. :D

 Are we talking about cutting large window mounts or getting a big one-piece board to fix artwork on?

I've used that bevelled profile for big pseudo-window mounts. If you want, you can blend the corners and paint it so no visible mitre. But it has to be said that there is a chance that shrinkage will cause a crack along the join later. If I were floating I wouldn't use a window mount anyway.....

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I guess conservation standard is of importance to us, so am not keen on using MDF and paint... but I'm about to give John Purcell a ring. That white cotton museum board sounds perfect. :D

Arqadia do a supersized mount board. It only comes in a textured white.
Nielson also do a range of Jumbo sized mountboards.
