Snooker Ball - Help Needed!

Hi everyone!

Had a customer in who wants a macth ball from the Crucible framing...

Any ideas on mounting it?

I've had a look at the ball clips that Lion do, but they don't do one to fit a snooker ball.

Thanks!

Sink it into foamboard, covered in green baize type material? Done a few golf balls this way in the past.

Do you have any photos of any you've done in the past?

Could always put a sliver of 1.5" wide plastic pipe under the baize/felt and cover the ball in that wedding stuff call crewel? I think and anchor through the board, don't even see the crewel unless you look very very closely.

Tulle is great for golf balls as they are dimpled but snooker balls are perfectly smooth and shiny - you'd see the tulle more easily - what colour is the ball anyway?

If you sink it in to board for an engineering fit with no adhesive or anything else then it would have to be sunk half way and wouldn't look very good IMHO - but if that's the way to go then use two bevelled apertures back to back to prevent the ball moving either way, if that makes sense.

A display case and a circular hollow plinth would be good.

Its a red ball. I've heard of the Tulle method before, never tried it.

What i'm thinking of trying is using some metal coat hanger wire as formed rods, with some of that rubber piping which you put over it (dip it into boiling water to shrink it onto the wire). I think if I use 3 of these, evenly spaced around the ball, it should hold it in place. If that works, i'll have to see what it looks like, then maybe i'll use some green felt to cover the formed rods up.

The idea with foam board is good, but as stated, you would only see a maximum of just under half the ball, which isn't really the look I had in mind.

When it's done, which ever method I use, i'll stick a picture up so you can see.

Here's a clever idea

Make a snooker pocket, but with a finer mesh.

I like Robo's idea, although it might look a bit suggestive if not accompanied by the table. :itwasntme:

If you set the ball on a little shelf rather than fix it to the backing, you wouldn't have the weight to contend with. Then a sticky-fixer would hold it in place. Cover the top of the shelf with green baize over a chunk of foamcore so you can squish the ball down a tad to conceal the sticky pad.
OK, with very rough handling it might just dislodge, but it's not going anywhere far and not a serious job to put it back again.

You could put a nice engraved plaque on the front of the shelf bit. :D

Would not a criss-cross of melinex strips hold it in place?

If sunk in to a backing board a bit it would, not sure how it would look though. How's about using some of these ....... somehow?

How about getting an action-man type figure, making him a snooker player outfit and sitting him in the frame. Put the ball on his lap and wrap his arms around it. Get a figure with gripping hands.

You could even make him a little cue.

Time to knock off now. Brain in overdrive..... :|

There's a couple more suggestions here:

Luckily....I didn't get the above job so no extra help from me sorry!!

I really didn't want it!! So kinda put him off!! I don't think the screwing idea would have worked with mine either as they belonged to Mark Williams, from his first 147 break...he didn't really want them damaged!!

Just read a post on the Grumble where someone had used white stockings to wrap a golf ball and apparently looked even more invisible than tulle.
And stretches around better to boot. :D

OK. Start with the wisecracks here
