econoframes

Hi,

Are there any online stores that sell econoframes by the meter? I would like to buy a couple of meters to test these out with some frames I have as I am rather new to framing and wanted to make my own box frames and I'm not sure if the econoframes will be suitable or If I'm buying the right size, so would prefer test them prior to purchasing from somewhere like Lions. Or can they only be purchased from there?

Do you mean econospace?

I only know of one supplier besides Lion that sell them and that's PEL (Preservation Equipment Limited) but I don' think they do the full range and like Lion, only sell packs. Lion also sell a trial pack http://www.lionpic.co.uk/product/FrameT ... 412,0.aspx but it includes the clip-on 'Framespace' as well.

If that's no good then I think your best bet would be to ask if anyone here who uses it is willing to flog you a slack handful of offcuts to play with.

thanks for your reply. Sorry, yes I meant econospace to make box frames. Becuase I'm new to framing and more into actually designing what goes into them I don't really want to buy a bulk lot and also Lions only sell Min of £30.00 + VAT ontop & delivery so I really can't see myself ordering anything up to that amount but i might have another browse and see whats there.

I was considering getting a tab/nail gun so might be worth buying that to build up the order from Lions...what would be the best to go for around the £25.00 mark as all my frames will require permenant tabs or nails as possibly looking into also doing mirror designs and assume nails would be best for the back.

You could collect from Lion South if you can't/don't want to meet their carriage-paid minimum on their own van - I think there's a small discount for collection, but your fuel would write that off.

If you're in to framing, at any level, it's not difficult to build up the the minimum carriage-paid amount on their own van ............ or by carrier even, they sell everything!

Daveym, are you sure you don't mean boxframe from Arqadia? if you want to convert frames to box frames

yes I would like to convert exisiting frames I have into box frames. I bought a bulk quantity of frames a year ago that have the right depth to them in order to convert them into a box frame. I am not a framer by any means as I have said in previous posts on this forum, but it does not appear overly difficult to make a box frame with an existing frame if using something like econospacers. I made several box frames for some 3D work i was doing but instead of using econospacers I was actually cutting the wood and gluing it to the insides of the frame and it just took overly long as I also painted the inner wood to match the frame. These were 6x8 frames I have and the biggest frames I want to aquire are 12" x 10" if I can speed up the production. I can't buy ready made box frames partly due to the cost I am looking to resell and also I have something that applies to the inner glass and it would not work if the glass has aleady been inserted as I would need to remove the glass.

Are you going to be making mounts? If so you can make a window mount and hide a spacer behind that, so you can experiment with thin wood, foamboard, or mountboard scraps.

Maybe you could use something like this and add narrow DS tape - a DIY econospace.

as per your other post on the matter, you could do as I do

I use the Paper Covered Slips from Simons for a lot of this work, 3 colours - Black , White and Ivory and in 3 different depths 12mm , 18 mm and 25 mm, they are on page 16 of this year's New Moulding Supplement.
I like them because you can join them on the underpinner, and they just slip in to the frame, great for R/M Box frames
