novice framer help please

Post by mitchellfearnley »

Hi Forum

Hoping for some help please
I am having trouble with my mitres
My Morso fences are square thanks to the kindness of Ian from Callington Cornwall (thanks Ian)

Flat mouldings seam to come together OK but joints are tight at the back and a little open at the front after under pinning I can glue the fronts tight and then pin but 1 or more joints open slightly at the back
Contoured thicker or ornate moulding and issue is worse or exagaraited same thing with the joints :head:

I am a novice with second hand kit in the garage trying to learn as I go

please can I get some suggestions

thanks for helping :D

Hi,
Are your blades sharp? If so, have they been hollow ground?
Assuming the answer to both is yes, its possible that your left fence might need a little adjustment, i'm fairly sure for a gap at the front you need to move the left fence towards yourself, a very small amount at a time, practice on something flat and wide(not warped) until you can place 4 bits on your workbench and they join perfectly unpinned.

There is a guide for the morso adjustment on here somewhere which you should read before moving anything as i'm only telling you as i remember it.........my morso cuts bang on every time, never had the need to move the left fence, as soon as i notice any small changes in the quality of cut, i simply change the blades for a sharp set.

Hopefully someone will put up a link for the guide.

As for using second hand equipment, don't worry about that, once set correctly your morso will outlive you and all of us put together :D

I suspect we may have a terminology conflict here, do you mean -

"front" as in the inside edge and "back" as in outside edge of the mitre or -

"front" being the top of the moulding as it sits on the Morso and back being the bottom
