Spatial???

Post by osgood »

Sorry folks, but I don't like this word 'spatial' that has recently been suggested for a type of framing that has already had several names in place for many years.
Most of the framing we do is 'flat', but objects are three dimensional. Hence the term '3D Framing'. 'Display Case is another good term that has been used for a long time.

Dictionary says:
'Spatial' - of or pertaining to space. + existing or occurring in space; having extension in space.
Inappropriate in my mind!

'3D' - of, pertaining to, or representing something in three dimensions; three-dimensional + having a three-dimensional form or appearance;

Works perfectly!

Let us please just use that old favourite principle - KISS!
Let us please not complicate the uncomplicated!

Hi Ormond,

3 Dimensional sounds better to me too! It's not about space - It's about shape. People can relate to shape, but space is an empty hole!

Yeah, I've always just referred to 3D framing.

Spatial could work in some regions etc.
I suppose 3D framing is the subject (not a problem exactly), and spatial framing is the answer ?

I certainly don't see the need for anything other than 3D / 3 dimensional, etc, in my vocabulary.

Spatial ?
When I first saw the term as used here, I thought a client might think you are going to send her wedding bouquet into orbit !!

Hey, who spells it spacial ?
The US ?
Probably : )
Regards,
Les

Forgive me if I do not seem to be as active as I should be on a topic that I originally posted.

I do not have the ability to stay at a computer console for the extended periods of time that keeping up with this debate requires, the reason is purely physical and I believe I have to accept the stresses I have subjected my skeletal frame to over the course of a working and sporting lifetime.

I am perfectly fit, can walk up to 15 miles in a day, however the discomfort experienced after a period on console and keyboard can possibly influence the content I post.

The term used originally was 'Spatial Framing', it is not necessarily one that I particularly like but in the absence of another it was intended to describe something beyond 3D framing.

A picture framer may well be satisfied with the term 3D framing to describe the techniques used in artefact framing.

It is possible that todays framer and the framer of tomorrow will be able to offer more in both practical service and advice.

There are both advantages and disadvantages with many types of 3D frame be it:-

box, shadow box, recessed frame, all glasscover and base, acrylic bubble, display case and onwards.

Some you peer in and wonder, others are designed to walk around and admire.

The ideas expressed by conceptual artists have been expressed, it is irrelevant if it to our tastes or not, what is relevant, 'is there business to be had'.

I am not a picture framer, if I appear to fish it is to find out if I really do have something to offer.

I have expressed the belief that there are methods that framers, within the constraints of a busy framing environement, can make glass covers.

In Pete Bingam's Agony, there are two pictures that I supplied and a method of making a glass cover, sadly I could not do it with such brevity.
With Regards,

Cubic framer.
