Backing options?

Hello again,
I have been looking into backing board options. It would appear that the standard practice is to use 2/2.5mm MDF/Hardboard. I have experience with building and contacts to aquire MDF in 5mm thickness. would this be a viable option or would it push the weight up too much? Even so, what foamboards etc should I have a stock of to thicken things up?

5mm might be a bit much, on a larger piece you'd be surprised the weight difference it can make. Also, it'll be a killer on some mouldings with small rebates. I use Simons back/10 on most of my stuff.

There's been much debate on the use of MDF - myself I do not use it and find the ease of use of Artbak or similar so much better. Nevertheless 5mm is just too thick, and will rule out many a moulding including those where you need to compress even Artbak a tad to achieve a result.

I like Simons Back/10 and Simons Back/14. I stock both of them and buy 40 sheets at a time to get the best price. Both are good quality boards and also a lot easier to cut than MDF.

As has been previously said 5mm would be too heavy.

I would buy your backing when you buy your glass. I use craft board backs, looks like mdf but cut's a lot easier.

I've previously been using Artbak Aqua, but the last batch of 100 I got came in bowed the wrong way! So also looking for something new! Wasn't too keen on Back/10 myself...sometimes it came in bent the wrong way which allowed a gap to form between mount and image...

I have used 4mm mdf for a large exhibition of drawings, but that was at the expressed request of the customer. It did make for heavy frames but it was probably requested to give more protection to the artwork.

You could use Simons BACK/14 it's the same both sides, so if it is warped (Which I have found not to happen much) you turn it the other was around, plus it's solid core, so you can use Wun Pull or Craft machines to put hinges and d-ring on the back
