small wood boring insect - can have devastaing effect on soft and hardwoods - boring lavae form turns into beetle spring - early summer in uk climate - capable of flight - will infect all timber not pre treated with insecticide - can be erradicated with insecticide to a degree - but wouldnt want infected wood within my workshop. Look for the dust produced by boring - small holes in wood - small light brown beetles - maggoty type larvae - you rarely see the latter. If you get woodworm in a frame they will bore through all elements of frame (except glass). if you have a job brought in to you for framing and suspect that woodworm are present - place object in large polythene bag - seal very carefully - wait for a couple of weeks to see if any wood dust appears in bag - if it does recomend that your customer takes the object to a specialist company for deinfestation. Never accept any moulding that show signs of live woodworm - i know this sounds obvious but wood can be infected at any stage - growing - whilst at manufacturers - stored within your worshop. I' am from Indonesia, We are manufactured photoframe, wooden worn happen because the wood don't have pre treatment or usually some species of wood have a eggworn, so that wood should be pre-treatment
by vaccum process, for send out the worn and water, in indonesia wooden species ussualy get worn is haveabraziliensis Rubberwood, Kemiri, Ramin, etc :)

Can you tell us some more about pre-treatment?

If a wood has been treated will it never again be attacked by woodworm, or does the pre-treatment just kill off any worms which happen to be in the wood at the time?

In the States we have "powder post beetles" that we sometimes find in imported wood. Even though is is supposed to have been fumigated it still appears from time to time.

A major infestation requires the services of an expert (exterminator) who can handle the industrial strength chemicals. Minor infestation is handled by simply throwing away the moulding (outside) that has the bugs as quickly as possible to avoid contamination with other stock. A vacumn will remove the dust. Discard the dust bag after use outside.

If a finished frame is noted to have the bugs it can be placed in a deep freezer (below -0c) in a plastic bag to kill the larva and eggs.
