Thick board on Keencut Futura

Post by King Duck »

When setting up my Futura for extra thick 4mm board I keep having the same odd problem. I set the depth of the blade and do a cut, I rotate the board and go for the next cut. Only now the blade doesn't cut all the way through. I have checked that the blade is not retracting and that it is tightly locked in place. I had the same problem the last time I was cutting thick stuff as well. Is anyone familiar with this trouble?

My current project involves cutting a double apeture mount into the thick stuff. Any tips on setting up the cutter very welcome!

You're a brave lad to even attempt slicing board that thick in one go. I would normally do it in two or three cuts, advancing the blade after each pass.

If you are determined to do it in one go, you'll need a fresh blade for each side. When I first got my Futura I was trying it in once cut, however like Prospero says, I now try several passes.

For 4 mm board I would even set my cmc to cut in 2 passes.

Multiple passes is the answer. I think the blade was twisting as I pressed it in so therefore was not going all the way through. (It was also distorting the line of the cut as well). A very light score to begin and then multiple cuts yielded very good results.

2.5 is fine with one pass, I use a fair bit of it.
