We had to replace the glass in a customers frame today. It was framed by our favorite bodge-up merchant from Exeter. We've discussed his work before!
This time, this frame has been made with only three wedges in the corners. As per usually no glue either! That cheap crummy masking tape must be better than I thought. As you will have guessed one corner was joined by the masking tape. Wish I had the camera with me!
I twigged straight away who did it. So as per usually I asked the customer if she framed it herself and then showed all the things which are wrong with it. Great fun!

That's right one in each corner = three corners only.
I'm told he's very bad tempered and his staff often don't stay long. There's never any quality checks made. Whenever something comes in which looks like one of his, I quickly wiggle the corner to see if it's only got one wedge per corner and no glue.
If so,I like to ask the customer "if they did it themselves" and of course right on cue they ask why, so I can show them all the bad workmanship. He must get a good ear-bashing from some customers.
The worse bit of 'workmanship' I ever saw was a mount with two oval openings. Both openings had a nice lead-in score where the blade had been started on the outside. But what really astounded me was when I turned the mount over and looked on the back. There was big writing in maker pen something like "Sale....blah, blah, etc". Yes, you guessed it. The piece of m/b had been used as a sign and it had obviously been stood outside on the pavement for some time as there were some interesting stains where a pigeon had cr*pped on it. It really amazes me that the guy is still in business.
It's amazing how many of us have a cowboy close by, yet they remain in business for years on end.
Most people are very reluctant to complain and get arsy with these 'framers' who are not going to change their ways, no matter what anyone does or says. Plenty more 'mugs in the sea' is the attitude.
Suggestions from me of small claims court warnings or recompense are met with a 'really don't want to go down that route response.' Sad really
Very fortunate is the framer who has no one like this on their doorstep.
I hope to get back to my original posting level after a similar period of personal issues not unlike Merlin's.
