Mirror mirror (how do I hang you) on the wall..

Post by Fellows Framing »

Hello,

I have been asked to frame a 1.2 by 1.6 metre 6mm glass that is silver leafed to make into a mirror. It is going to be heavy.

What is the best way to hang it?

I can put heavy duty hangers on the frame that has reinforced corners but will this be strong enough?

Does anyone know of any other ways to hang it? I thought of some rail type system that slots together but cannot find anything like it on google.

Or a system that goes onto backing board? But then the board will have to be thick which then increases the weight....

Help please!

Sarah :D

Something that size I would probably use security or spring lock brackets, this would support all round, if you use French cleats then reinforce the mitres.

Thank you.

How far apart would you recommend to put the spring locks please?

How big is the moulding?

The moulding is about 5cms wide. It will be gilded.

I would use spring locks 2 on the sides and about 3 on the bottom. The bottom is the most important as it takes the weight. I would also use steel 90 degree plates on the corners as well. Once it's on the wall the moulding and jojnts won't be under as much stress. Remember also if it is hanging in a public space it has to be safety backed as well.

A 50mm moulding around a piece of 6mm glass that size is pushing your luck IMHO. :? I wouldn't rely on the frame to support it, no matter how you try to beef up the corners.

I would fix the mirror to a hefty sub-frame to which the hangings are attached and then just drop the frame around and secure it with brackets.

Yes my concern to is the moulding width.

Can you explain more about the subframe ie what it entails please?

Thanks.

This is my pet method for subframe construction.
I like to use a laminated frame as this makes it more stable and also allows you to fabricate half-lap joints rather than the much weaker mitres.
You need some wide but thin timber. The easiest to get and cheapest I've found is pine tongue&groove cladding. You need to square off the tongue side, but the groove side is no problem.
It's easy to build. First cut four pieces the same size as the outer dimensions of the mirror. Lay them out and put a screw though each corner. Square it up by measuring diagonally. When all is true, add more screws to keep it so. Next, unscrew each corner in turn so as not to disturb the squareness and glue it well and add as many screws as necessary. You can also add cross-braces if need be.

After you do this simply fill in the gaps to form the full thickness all round.

At this stage you can make a sneaky hanging point by cutting down the width of one of the fill-in pieces on the top rail. This forms a little cavity that will fit over a complimentary batten fixed securely to the wall.

Then you just need this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/geocel-trade- ... 10ml/95057

This will form a very secure support for the mirror. You could hang it on the wall without the outer frame which is virtually relegated to just tidying the edge. The subframe will probably protrude fro the back. This makes attaching it to the subframe easy. A few LION bendy plates will do the trick.

The best thickness of cladding to use is maybe 8mm. Which doubles-up to 16mm. add 6mm for the mirror and you have 22mm to swallow. Depending on the profile of the frame you could paint the edge of the subframe black or add pieces to the back of the frame.

How would you attach the mirror to the sub frame?

Get the bendy plates and bend them 90º. Screw one end to the frame and the other to the subframe. Of course it depends on just how much subframe protrudes just where you place the screws. In the side is preferable, but the plates can be easily bent to conform.

Thanks prospero, looks like an sturdy way to hang heavy mirrors. And relatively easy to make. Cheers

If the house fell down the mirror would be the only thing left standing.
