Logan Simplex 750 Mountcutter - Occasional wonky mounts

Post by Bagel Framer »

Hi all,

Granted that Logan's aren't perhaps the favoured choice for mountcutters,
I don't know if anyone else has similar problems with cutting mounts on a Logan Simplex 750 Mountcutter?

As of late, I get the occasional "un straight" bevel - I believe I've tried everything, ie. squaring arm is square, I'm using a backing sheet, I've put in a new blade, the mount board is square.

Not wishing to use the old phrase "a bad workman blames his tools", but I'm curious to see if I'm not alone in my query - perhaps I'm doing it too quick and will practice a number of techniques to see which one works, along with watching the video that came with the cutter again.

Ultimately I'd like to get a better cutter in the not too distant future, maybe either a Ultimat Gold or a Fletcher Terry 2200. Lion have a November special on the 2200 but with a baby on the way next May I may have to go second-hand as and when.

Thanks

Hi
We had this problem on our logan too. and we were advised that the blade setting was to long, and was cutting too deeply into the backing sheet therefore causing a movement on the blade. Try retracting your blade so barely cuts into the backing sheet you should get an even cut.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Ricky.

Ricky,

Thanks for that, I'll try that out when I get home.

Blade depth

Post by Martin Harrold »

To check the blade depth, use two small pieces of the mat board you are working with, one above the other. Place them under the running rail and cut with the bevel blade pressed down to the stop.

Remove the boards. If the top one is cut through cleanly and the lower one has a fine score mark about 1/4 of the way through, then your blade depth is set correctly. Break it open to check.

As Ricky says, many mount cutting problems are caused by too much blade depth. It also blunts the blades more quickly.

To make blades cut better and last longer, give new ones a few strops on a piece of mountboard. It polishes and hones them in a way that no machine can.

Hi Martin,

The polishing tip is not one I've come across before. Is the polishing action akin to that used for a cut-throat razor on leather?

Swooshes

Post by Martin Harrold »

Yep - just a few swooshes from side to side often makes a big difference. It polishes the tip. Try it and tell us if it works for you.
