Photorealistic Painting Anyone?

The thought occurs that he could have just printed the photo. I'm assuming he copied it
directly from a photo. I doubt if the poor girl stood stock-still for the hundreds of hours
it took to complete the work. In which case the 'art' stopped as soon as he clicked the shutter.

A great demonstration of draughtsmanship but nothing else.

While Leng Jun's work is probably not recognised as "Art" by the art world, the skill level she demonstrates with this piece is impressive.

It's a hell of a skill and he could no doubt make it less realistic and use as much licence as he wanted, if he wanted, whereas those that do that could not do what he does.

I wish I could take photos that good!

Some of the great artists of the last hundred years or so have worked from photographs, I don't see anything wrong with that per se, but I've never been a fan of photo realistic painting, they always seem a bit empty or emotionless, like a....photo.

Amazing skill to make a painting look like a photograph but I prefer his paintings that look like paintings. To paint with photo realism is one thing (a human camera?) but to paint with loose brush strokes (a crude way of putting it I guess) and capture a likeness/personality in the portrait is a talent I can only stand back and admire, lovely work

I've been selling paintings for a good few years and I have found that while people will admire and marvel
at paintings like that for the sheer effort and undoubted skill.

But you don't want them to admire the stuff. You want them to buy it.
People don't buy paintings because they are cleverly executed. They buy them if they like them.


Anyone remember Tom Keating? He used to have a TV prog back in the day where he would demonstrate the various techiques
of famous artists. (He was known as a faker. ) One thing he said always stuck with me....

I find they go away very quickly.

"That's a dreadful picture/frame," said loudly - but they soon move on.

I've a couple of Max Gill maps - of Australia and Canada. People spend ages standing in front of them. Ages. "We went there." "Oh look at that." And eventually stop clogging up the stand and move on.

I think Leng Jun's work is extraordinary. Since this thread was posted (thanks JohnMcafee), I've kept returning to his work from time to time and looking to see if posters/prints are available. I haven't yet found any, but if anyone knows if posters/prints are available, please do let me know. I could study it for hours and still marvel at his dexterity and skill.
