Repairing chipped metallic border

Post by John Andreae »

I am framing a very large painting with a very expensive moulding and having cut out the lengths I have notice a small (4mm) chip out of the gold/pewter border. I must have missed it on my usual check on unwrapping.

Any ideas about the possibility of an invisible touch up? I've bought some tubes of metallic finish 'rub n buff waxes of different metallic hues. Has any one tried these or other ideas?

Any advice appreciated it might save me £50 !

Any repair will be noticeable under scrutiny and to be honest not something I would not do as the customer has not paid for a piece if flawed moulding.

Hard to say without seeing the chip. Some dings take seconds to repair and some are nigh-on impossible.

If it's actually got a chunk missing rather than a dent or a scuff there is always the possibility of grafting a bit in from a scrap piece.
You need good eyesight and a lot of patience.

Or cut out a bit (small) if it's only a ding and graft a bit in..tricky but possible, on a good day. Give it a go, it sound like you have nothing to loose. Have you joined the frame?

Thais for advice . I ended up getting some stuff from Fred Aldous called 'rub n 'buff' . It comes in different metallic hues and it's a kind of wax that sets hard. You can buff it up to a shine. Repair almost invisible.
