Cassese underpinner problem

All of a sudden my old CS 88 underpinner has stopped pushing the wedges up. Its a foot operated model. I have removed the distributor block and cleaned it but the hammer fails to operate and push the wedges up. Is it time to replace the hammer or is it a cable problem? Seems strange to suddenly happen. How easy is it to fit a new hammer by the way.

Did you re grease it when you reassembled it? Did the block have any ware or groves in it? This can sometimes stop the travel of the hammer this is more costly than replacing the hammer
Its not too hard to fit a hammer just a bit fiddly. You need to remove the block and hook on a the new hammer to the peg then slip the block back over.
I haven't used one for about 9 yrs and can't remember the score with the cable apart from I used to snap them.

I can't remember if they get stretched and that affects the hammer action.
One last thing is the not moving up? or is it that the wedge isn't going up? this could be because the wedge is not getting into the block usually because the spring has weakened.
Hope this helps.

Hi Gray, thanks for your reply. I have removed the block again, which seems OK, and greased up the channel. Resembled and after a few more adjustments now have some movement of the hammer. But 10mm wedges are still only pushing up half way above the top of the block. So it appears further adjustment is necessary but I haven't a clue as to what, so any suggestions very welcome. Many thanks.

Perhaps give Neil Stout Framing engineer a ring 07793 709123 he is very friendly and may well be able to give some advice over the phone.

Hi Grey, thanks for your help. All Ok now assembled greased up clamp and pressure pad in position and foot pedal is now pushing the wedges in. Not sure what the problem was all about but learnt a few things en route!
