Hi All

Does anyone no what the brush or roll-on protective coating is that is used on canvases? It is claimed to to protect the image from fading and can be wiped over with a damp cloth.

Usually it's a canvas varnish, we use this stuff. http://www.printbc.uk/products/print-varnish.html

I would say that is up to the printer to apply, not you the framer, same as fixative for charcoals/ pastels

These coatings have little or no UV filtering properties. They may claim to be UV resistant, but that refers to
the integrity of the coating itself. The way to stop possible fading is to use the right quality inks.

As Steve says, he who prints it coats it. Or Should do. OK if you are doing your own printing but I wouldn't do a
print that someone brought to you that you didn't print. On that path lies madness.

A good optical brightener free canvas and a good quality varnish all printed with pigment inks gives a good fade resistant canvas product.

I spray the varnish which leaves the surface really smooth but as it's a water based product I wouldn't want to wipe it down with a wet cloth or use any cleaners.... a soft feather duster is more than adequate.

If you want it wipeable then a Hotpress heat film is the way to go.

... and he who prints applies the coating. You are on a hiding to nothing if it goes wrong, and it will.

It's just that the Canvas Hut (a franchise me thinks) is offering this as a roll on for £3.00 as an extra to the printing stretching service?
