I use these to fit a canvas in a frame.

Yep. The problem is with slips and no glass is that a canvas will bear on the inner edge of the slip and push it out.

If you have 5mm vnails you can underpin the slip, but that doesn't help a lot.

How far does the slip overlap the canvas? I assume there is a gap twixt canvas and frame.

What I do in cases like this is to build a backer for the slip from suitable width square timber.
You can get near-enough size strip timber from DIY sheds (B&Q?). If it's a tad too narrow you can fill the gap with
foamcore scraps to hold the canvas in place. Mitre/join the timber to fit in the back of the frame and then glue the
joined slip to it. On a finished slip you might have to rough up the back to get a good bond with PVA glue. In effect,
you are making a rebated moulding.

The overlap is about 25mm which is proportionate for the small canvas. The only fixings i have are - missing!, but they were one piece spring things screwed one end which bear down on the canvas frame to retain it.
I'll have to try and get something today.

Thanks for your help

These are the fixing I have by the way,

What I have Pete is an A136 from the Wessex catalogue but at 25mm, they call it a fillet. My fillets are 6mm and are used with mountboard.

They seem to call A136 a spacer - you can get fillets that are a slightly softer space if you wish.

Why not use a narrow moulding like https://www.wessexpictures.com/A120.html in the place of the spacer? You can pin it, it will not bow and it won't cover the face of the painting.

That would have worked but I'll not get a delivery this side of Christmas. But that's a useful moulding and I do use Wessex

I have these things and have used them but....................... if I'm being completely honest I'm not entirely sure I'm using them properly. :?

If you have a range of mirror plates, you can bend them and use them to hold a canvas in, in fact you can bend them into a right angle and screw to the back of the frame and into the side of the canvas
