Tabernacle Frame

Post by GeoSpectrum »

I had the urge to make a Tabernacle frame. So
I did, more for fun and learning than anything else. It’s quite a simple example but I’m quite pleased
With it. Another first.

That looks great Alan!
I live in a traditionally Baptist area, this would fit right in, in one of the local Chapels.
What would you have to charge for something like this?
Justin.

I'm very impressed. Such an eye catching and absolutely faultless looking frame. Somehow a few handclaps, don't seem enough. Mind you I've always had a big thing about tabernacle frames. Were you tempted to add a portico on the top and perhaps a couple of finiclues? I think that you can never be accused of going too much over the top with a tabernacle frame.

Well done! True class!

I’m planing another one, a bit larger so I’ll be looking on adding some additional features. The size of the one photographs is quite small with a rebate of 140x205mm. I’m still working on a price....not a big seller in the UK I suspect but I’d happily offer them to the trade if anyone’s interested.

I've just woken up from a nap and looked at the photo and thought it was standing on the floor, which would
make it about 3ft high. My eyes are coming into focus now....

It's absolutely beautiful! I'd love to be able to make something like that as I'm a massive tabernacle fan!
Id' be interested in buying it too actually.

Well done!

What sort of finish is it? Waxed? I'd love to know how you achieved it.

After making the frame I gave it a good sanding with 120 grit. The frame was then painted with black gesso (My own mix). When dry another sanding, the black gesso turns grey when sanded so you can see all the bits you've missed. I masked off the sight edge edge and applied 'bole' ie red tile coloured paint. When the sight edge was dry I masked it off and gave the whole frame a wipe down with meths to remove any dust/grease. It was then sprayed using an acrylic black spray. Once dry I used gilt varnish for the sight edge and then rubbed it back a little to show some of the red bole.

That's it. I would probably do more coats of the gesso in future. I haven't waxed it yet but probably will use a clear wax and rottenstone to give it some age.

Pm me if interested. The one in the photo is taken, but I'd happily make some more.
