Hi all now that we all have more time on our hands I thought i would do some research into cnc mount cutters.

1. Is it better to rent or buy? who from?

2. Best machine for using any size of board thick mounts seem to be popular my way!

3. Can off cuts of board be used or does it have to be full size sheet every time?

4. The big final question who is the best?!!!

Im based in the cotswolds and want to upscale my business thinking this will save time and give perfect results!

I bought a refurbished machine from Gunnar and been very please.

Single head that cuts both angle and straight cuts.

Cuts 3.5mm thick mounts which some cant.

Even cuts 5mm foam core with straight cuts.

Any size piece of board can be used but just need to allow 35mm boarded on the two edges of the machine. i.e to cut a mount with 500 x 500 mm outer dimensions you would need a piece of mountboard approx 540mm x 540mm.

if cutting small mounts at the same time as large mounts the software will even lay the small mount in the inner of the large mount thus utilising as much of the board as possible.

When in your position and choosing a CMC I was advised to ensure that there was UK support in place.

I was intending to buy a Gunnar F1, but a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. One of the factors that inflenced my choice of the Gunnar F1, was the fact that you don't need to keep changing heads. What ever you want to do, the machine is really and configures it's hybrid head, before cutting the mount, or mounts.

This avoids the risk of mishandling the head and dropping it onto the floor and damaging the head, creating the need for a replacement head and not being able to continue using the machine, until the replacement head is available. I like the fact that apart from changing the blades, or the embosing tool, that all the other user intervention is done via the computer keyboard.

I'm not knocking the other CMC's on the market, as they all seem to be very versatile and able to do much the same things as each other. As far as I am aware the Gunnar F1 may no longer be a current model, but they appear to be still supported by Gunnar, as is the earlier model that was produced before the F! hybrid came along.

I am now not working the same hours per week, as I have suffered a stroke and I also a pensioner and semi-retired and in my current situation, it is now difficult to justify the investment and associated costs of getting and running a CMC. During 2022, ! will become 69 years of age and the lease on my shop will be up for renewal. As you will probably understand, I don't know what my plans will be by then, but a CMC is not likely to be on the list of things, that I will be wanting.

I like the wizard mount cutters as they are able to cut jumbo boards. This was important to me.
