what is is preferred way to fix mirror in a frame?

Depends rather on what sort of size you are talking about, and what sort of frame.
On something heavy, with enough space in the rebate, I'd use a sub-frame, and screw that in.
Otherwise if it's small/stable enough, put a board behind it and then use framers points.

Traditionally, wedges of wood were placed between the edge of the mirror and the outside lip of the rebate. The individual wedges were secured with a single nail into the frame at an angle. The 90°edge of the mirror would "grab" onto the softer glass of the mirror.

One nice touch is to black out the underside of the rebate with a fat marker. This prevents the edge of the mirror
reflecting any scruffy bits. It looks cleaner.

You can use Volara tape in the rebate too, to cushion it and black out the rebate.
