cutting hi gloss mouldings

Post by rich0410 »

hi all

i've been cutting a hi gloss moulding, but cant seem to get a clean cut without a fragment of the gloss coming off. the moulding is green and the softwood underneath glares out so makes it unusable.
i'm wondering if the morso blades need servicing (still very sharp) or do you protect the mitres with some sort of tape?
i tried with brown backing tape but it pulled fragments off when i removed it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I've used the yellow Frog Tape before for jobs like this with some success. It's low tack and peels off easily after cutting. I would suggest trying it on a small sample first to make sure that it doesn't mark the surface of the moulding. Make sure you buy yellow, which is low tack and not the green, which is much tackier.

If you have a spare pair of freshly sharpened blades, swapping the blades will answer part of your question.

Imo some mouldings are not suited to cutting on a Morso, but require a mitre saw or being ordered on chop.
