Hi everyone,

I've had a request from a customer to make something similar to this frame commonly used by artist Taryn Simon
From the customer:

"These are the approximate dimensions it would be:
Image area (A1): 59.4 cm wide × 84.1 cm tall
Text panel: 10.8 cm wide × 84.1 cm tall
Wooden frame border: 2.5 cm on all sides
Total frame size: 75.2 cm wide × 89.1 cm tall"

Just curious how you all would go about tackling something like this or whether you think this is something more suitable for a carpenter?

It's not rocket science, but a few basic woodworking skills would be helpful.

A Japanese pull saw would be handy and a sharp chisel.

* On a side note... I'd put the panel on the left side. But that's just me.

“Something similar” could be do-able for some, a thin frame as normal with a panel framed in the same moulding on three sides on the right, aperture chiselled out if you’re clever and/or don’t have the posh saw that might do it.

I’d pass though - not least of all because it would be doubtful anyone would want to pay for my time, both in learning and wasted getting it right! Also doubtful I’d make another like it.

Interesting that it appears to have butt joints not mitres, that points towards solid wood, a job for a skilled cabinet maker.

This for me would definitely fall in the don't do category

Interesting, looks like walnut? Has a 1950's-1970's Scandinavian look.

Those are mahogany frames, says so in the article.
