Covering damaged painting edges with WIDER rebate?

Hello:
I am trying to find a framing solution that better covers the edges of old or damaged oil paintings. I have several small oil paintings bought at thrift stores or auctions that are missing frames or for which the old frame needs replacing. This has left the paintings' edges scuffed or marked with a line from the lip of the old frame. I would like to cover these edges with a frame that has a rebate WIDER than the standard 1/4 inch (in other words, I want to make the frame opening smaller for the existing piece to cover damaged edges). Adding the standard liner doesn't help because it comes with its own rebate of 1/4". Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you very much!
